Well my guy arrived safe and sound today at 4:30 PM! I can't believe it is actually happening - finally together with no more separation!!

Unbelievable, I spent 21 years in India as just a simple village kid, often with no running water and electricity, thinking I never would return to USA; and he grew up in a family who are illiterate and just tilled the land (they still live in a mud house in a small village with no running water). With his determination and sheer hard work he got a degree and became an accountant and auditor. Unbelievable we both made it to USA!

He had a smooth flight (the first in his life) from Hyderabad to Dubai to Hamburg to JFK to LAX to Fresno. Only he said he was grilled a lot at JFK. They questioned him for half an hour, cross-examining him about our age difference, how much money he brought in, and even if he GOT IT ON (with finger motions!!!) with me!!!!!!!! Can you believe!!! Finally they let him pass but it was a major trauma. He said it was MUCH worse than the interview at the Consulate! (I'll get more details later & post them.)

Anyway all is rosy now, he got his EAD in JFK (YEA!) and after resting a few days he will start ESL classes & hopefully some nearby part time employment.

JanaknJanet, he landed in Terminal 4, the only one that all said was good for sleeping without being asked to leave. He therefore stayed on in that Terminal for the 17-hour layover. Understandably he didn’t sleep much but he could lay down for some hours and relax undisturbed.

This morning we went on a bus ride to check out the adult ed center, and then got a few job applications from local businesses, he’s eager to start working immediately! He planned to fill out the applications and bring with his résumé in the evening, but instead fell into another exhausted, deep sleep. He’s one tired guy, overwhelmed with soooo many things at once!

Oh wow, can't believe I missed this! Congratulations to you both, and especially to Nagaraju for surviving the grilling at JFK. Ick. Finger motions?!? That is appalling... poor guy.

But now you are together at last. The rest is easy, imho, because you will be there to support one another and can walk each step together.

Oh My goodness.. sooo BRAVE... He just arrived.. and.. . wow... already on a bus ride to find things...

if you havnt started yet.. you might want to do a little journal of the things that happen during his first few days.. little comments or reactions... just think.. to look back at that and remember what it was like..

Even tho Janak has flown before.. ( now has been 6 times) I have the video he took while he was on the plane at takeoff that he took during his first flight (two yrs ago to Africa).... I think we forget what it is like when we take these things like a common occurance.. and then when someone has never been on a plane and photographs every little thing.. I watch these things and giggle.. remembering what it was like for him.. such a treasure.

Thanks yep, we are on our toes! And yes I have written down little notes of first reactions of things... his amazement at what a dishwasher is for instance, and reactions to tasting new veggies and to the huge stores and the prices to go with them (actually, some products are cheaper than in India!). He's being so wonderful cooking for me and cleaning up also... honeymoon stage is great!

On http://www.volunteermatch.org/ (found on this website), I found a local youth org that is eager for his accounting help - it will be an excellent reference on his resume and can keep him busy while giving job applications. Tomorrow, Monday June 4th, he starts a really busy schedule: M-F, 10 AM - 4 PM volunteering at the youth org, M-Th; 6-9 PM ESL classes at the local adult school. And a number of job applications already given and more to be given soon! Pretty good for being here only 10 days so far!
