I arrived in Phoenix last week Thursday and wanted to go to the SSA office in Tucson tomoro - which will be 8 days from when I first arrived to apply for my SSN. Do you think this will be enough time for my information to have been received by SSA? I ask because Jamal has a day off tomoro and it will be the only time he'll be able to take me, plus I wanna hurry up and get it so I can get my driving license before I get married!!! Any help would be great smile.gif Thanks

You can certainly apply at any time for the SSN. If your name is not in the system yet, they will have to ask for manual verification which will delay you for some time.

Don't be surprised if a driver's license issued based on your passport and I-94 as primary identification expires at the same time as the I-94.

I doubt it['s worth it. ANother UKer (featherb) did hers quickly & was told it would be weeks. She waited until 14 days in & then got it quickly.

A drivers license will not likely be issued as your I-94 expires in 90 days.

Yup - but in AZ you can extend it with NOA from the AOS, so I'll be able to continue using it until I get my greencard etc

Oklahoma should take some lessons from Arizona on being reasonable.

Sounds great.

I would wait on your SSN though, I've never seen anyone able to get it so soon.

Why are you coming down to little Tucson to go to SSA Office.... You do realize that if you have any problems you have to return to the same office that you first applied at... and that's a 4 hour drive I wouldn't want to make without a drivers license.... Just a thought.... You can always go in to the office and see if they can verify your name. They could with me 2 days after me arriving... But, I never actually got my card.

O .. I actually live in Tucson. I took a direct flight from the UK to Phoenix coz I didnt want to deal with the hassle of changing planes in the states. So I can go in there and ask if they can verify my name? If they cant then I'll be able to come back later and try again without actually applying and having to go though manual verification??

My husband was successful at getting his SSN after 8 days - try it.

I just heard of a friend of mine taking her NOA for AOS to the DMV and getting her license. We'll try that because my husband has a TEMP Florida ID and we're about to get his Driver's license. I was worried because it'd only be valid for 2 more weeks, but looks like Florida is reasonable too good.gif .

I personally wouldn't go so soon. I went after 2 weeks and mine still wasn't in the system. Took about 8 weeks in total. Look at it this way, if it isn't in the system you'll have to wait much longer. Is it worth it?

Let me advise you then to NOT go to the SSA office on 6th Ave.... that is where I first went and unless it's close to you... you don't want to be going to the bad part of town too much... We were close to there the day that I decided to apply for my SSN I wish we had taken the time to go to the other office. You will be pleased to see from my timeline that Tucson is a very fast office to be going through. Email me if you have any questions ... I'm on the Northeast side of town.

is it possible to go to the office and ask if I'm on the sysem yet? If I am then to proceed, if not then I'll come back later?

What happened to Feather:

QUOTE(featherB @ May 7 2007, 01:28 PM) *
Tried to apply for an SSN this afternoon, but didn't have much luck. I arrived a week ago on Saturday, so was half expecting that I wouldn't be able to get one yet, but I thought the (possible) problem would be that I might not be showing up 'on the system' yet as I haven't been here that long. I mentioned to the woman at the SSA office that I've only been here a week and so thought the details might not have updated yet, but she said (after looking at something on her screen) 'no, it did'... I took this to mean that my details were all in there as they should be... but then after she'd typed in all the info from my application form, she announced 'not verified!' and told me I'll have to wait 6 weeks to get a social security number. I just said that I'd come back another day and hope that it works then.... but just wanted to double check that this problem (not being verified) should be fixed if I go back in a few days/next week/whenever? I ask this because, when I said to the woman at the office that I'd try again in a few days, she said 'it won't make any difference'....

Sorry for the ramble, just wanted to establish that this 'not verified' thing is just what happens if you try to apply too soon, and not some other problem I might have run into!

Except that I was verified in Tucson two days after my arrival. When talking to their office since then the card was sent on Feb 1st. (I can verify this because at the 2 week time I was able to go into the office and get a print out of my acutal SSN... I needed that for my military id was going to expire... they told me then the card was issued Feb 1) I just never got it... possible sent back by USPS because I didn't have my name in the mailbox. Who knows why the lady was so rude to feather. There are nice SSA people out there. Some have no clue... I have encountered problems at the 6th St. SSA Office with people not being able to change my last name or know what to do with a K-1 visa without talking to someone else. I don't see a problem with going and seeing if they can verify your name...

Well - as Jamal has a day off to take me to the SSA today, we went. It was all good thou - I was already in the system and the guy processed it fine, gave me a letter saying that I will receive the card within 2 weeks and if I went back on Tuesday then they will be able to give me the number! Needless to say, I'm very happy! This time next month I expect to be driving! lol!!!

We went to the main one on Campbell and even though the wait was long, everyone knew what they were doing!
