When we had two cats I had one big litterbox and I scooped it twice a day and changed the litter once a week and it never smelt bad except on the last morning (phew!) Now we have three cats and it seems to have changed the litterbox dynamic considerably... we're going to have to shift to a five-day-rotation and use more litter in a month. Which is to be expected when you add a cat!

My questions are - how many cats do you have, and how many litterboxes? How often do you scoop the box/es, and how often do you change the litter? (also, what kind of litter do you use?)
Sister Fracas
I have just one cat, so one litterbox (uncovered, but I want to get a covered one eventually) and I use Feline Pine. I scoop the poop daily and since the tinkle makes the pellets breakdown to sawdust, it's only necessary to completely empty and refill once the pellets are all broken down. That takes about 2 weeks with my cat. I love this litter because there is no dust and combined with the fact that she eats a high quality food, no smell of the poop. She doesn't track the pellets, but she does toss pellets out of the box....grrrrrrrrrrr mad.gif
almaty
we have sanita's old russian cat, age 12, from moscow via almaty to america..we use the clump kind...big-azz undercovered litter box..and sanita clean's it all the time..probably 3-6 times a day.,.
TracyTN
I'm considering trying the Feline Pine. My cat is famous for kicking a pile of litter (seriously - a PILE) on the floor once a day. Very messy!! Knowing her, she wouldn't use the pine. laughing.gif
PEGGY
My cat is back home.

She dont use a litter box, she goes outside.

I hate litter boxes no0pb.gif
SanDan
We have just one kitty (for the time being) and one fairly sized covered litter box. We use a plastic litter pan liner and scoop several times a day. Refill and change when necessary. The kitty litter we use is the deodorized/scented clumping kind (Fresh Step at the moment) but we also have a pack of plain litter pan deodorizer for emergencies tongue.gif
Kajikit
Feline Pine is a great cat litter for one or two cats... we used to use Yesterday's News but it got very stinky VERY quickly - the feline pine doesn't! Now we've got three cats it's not holding up as well and we're either going to have to start adding deoderiser (another stink) or change it twice a week instead of once...

3 beautiful burmese cats, all sadly still in England, but living in the lap of luxury there, so they're happy.

We have 2 large covered litter boxes with carbon filters in the top. Our vet said the general rule was that you should have the same number of boxes as cats. However, 99% of the time ours go outside as they have a catflap and free access to the garden whenever they want, so the boxes only really get used when it's cold or rainy and they dont want to go outside. We use regular sawdust and it works great, much cheaper than the clumping kind so it doesn't matter if you throw the whole contents out daily. It also smells really good. We used this also with them when they were kittens and were not allowed out. It probably had to be changed with the three of them 3 or 4 times a week, but like I said it was cheap so no problem. The one downside was that they tended to track it all around the house, but think that was more to do with the fact that they were babies and just jumped in and out between running madly around as they do at that age. smile.gif

I have one beautiful black cat, who is so spoiled its not funny. He uses his cat litter box faithfully, and if there is more than 2 turds in the darn thing (a large uncovered) and he has to go potty then he will hold it and meow until you scoop them out. laughing.gif

We have two cats and two huge uncovered boxes, and we use regular clumping litter--used to be because one of our litter boxes was self-cleaning and you can't use any other kind with it, but it broke. So we just have high-sided uncovered ones now (our older cat won't use a covered one). The kitten (okay, so she's nearly 2 years old, but we still call her "the kitten") likes to get as much litter in as many places as possible, so it's probably 15-18" deep. (The box, not the litter!) Both boxes get scooped every other day and they get cleaned whenever they look like they need cleaning--not too often, in other words. And the area around them gets Dust-Busted a couple times a day. laughing.gif

Well, my lil kitty cat is now nearly 7 months old. We had just a standard uncovered litter box til a week ago, then we received the new u-beaut "purrforma", automatical kitty tray. Phoebe just loves it!!! You have to use premium clumping litter in it, but OMG what a diffrence this has made. No more smells, no more litter mess outside the box.

Phoebe was named after Phoebe from "Friends", because of her song "smelly cat" sung on the show,..because OMG, when we first got lil miss "phoebe", she was a smelly cat indeed. She currently having her lil moody swings because she's in her first season. It's kinda funny cause all my cats prior had been desexed and I had never seen this before. when she first started ,..I thought she had fallen off her kitty tree climber.......LOL.... laughing.gif

We have 7 cats and 2 little boxes. We use clumping litter and clean them twice a day .
I bought one of those extra large automatic self-cleaning Petforma Litter boxes and let me tell ya what a waste of $200.00 There this metal rake thing thats supposed to rake the used litter across into a covered container after the cat leaves the box. The thing never worked right from the get go. It always got stuck halfway across and all ya would here is the motor grinding. VERY ANNOYING ! We actually cleaned it ourselves becuz it NEVER works. Finally one day the motor stopped running at all after only 2 months. So now its just a covered Giant non-motorized litter box that we still have to clean by hand.
Word of Advice: ]Don't waste your money on a Purforma Self-cleaning motorized litter box. mad.gif

I wouldn't be without my littermaid!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

We have on cat...kinda still a kitten...shes really small so we have a normal sized litter box. I scoop at least once a day...the whole cleaning thing...I would say once a week, but sometimes its a little longer...
moondancer627
luv.gif I think it's time to clean my litter box.. I voted once a fortenight, but what is that anyway.
Like Frances I use Feline Pine, scoop out the poops, but wash it out with bleach once the pine chips dissolve completely into sawdust.
I like Feline Pine cause it smells so good when it's brand new.
That clumping stuff grosses me out.

I told him not to and I also offered the neighbor to buy a cover for the sand-box... but, oh well, let's not talk about that... . blush.gif

We have 4 kitties and 3 litterboxes.. Used to use Feline Pine, but the store I get most of my groceries at doesn't sell it anymore crying.gif so.. i have switched to just regular clay (more natural..) I generally change it when it starts to smell bad.. But i miss feline pine because even with 4 kitties it took a long time to get stinky...

I've used so many different kinds of litter and never found one that sufficiently covered up the smell so I'm open to suggestions of a good one!

Kajikit - what food do you feed your cats? I'd love to find one to eliminate her smelly poop! I have a small apartment and the litterbox is in a walkin closet and when she poops it smells the whole place up tongue.gif Not a very friendly environment. I've used so much air freshener!!!

If the smell bothers you, we have covered boxes with carbon filters in the top and it really does seem to help. Ours are also fed exclusively on Hills Science Diet and that again seems to create less odor than wet food.

Our vet recommended this excellent product for odour problems. It is manufactured by a company called AnimalCare. There are two products one called 'Odour Elimiator' and another called 'Totalcare.' They are biological stain and odour removers specifically for pet, especially cat related odours and are safe for use on carpets, clothes, walls, furniture, you name it. We got this when my old cat was coming to the end of her life and had occasional urinary and bowel control problems. It really helped and the best thing about it is that it doesn't leave any scent itself. This is particularly good if you have a territorial cat as using a harsh air freshener or cleaning product can actually make them 'Go' more to get their scent back into the house. We bought these products from the vet's office, but you can buy them online if you do a google search. I don't know if they are available from vets in the U.S. but they're so good, I'd buy them online and pay to have them shipped. Believe me we must have tried dozens of products, and these were the two that really worked.

We have 2 cats. They are almost 8 years old, aprox. 16 lbs each.
Right now we use Arm & Hammer Super Scoop, but we can use any premium clumping litter with the LitterMaid.

I have no cats. I just visit my brother when I want to pet one. I just don't like how they get cat hair all over the house messy. But they are nice to visit!! tongue.gif

Wow, we scoop every day (Arm & Hammer deodorising litter) but clean out the whole thing...erm...once every month or two... Are you supposed to do it more often?? We've never noticed a stink but maybe we should ask a friend for an objective opinion...!

I don't change mine that often. I recommend anyone with an indoor cat to try Purina Pro Plan indoor formula, this stuff works miracles after a few days. We use it in the kennel where I work and the only time we have odor is when an owner insist on feeding food from home. Got my mother to try it, and she ran out so picked up some other brand from the grocery. She came in a couple of days later and ask for more of the pro plan, and was going to toss the other food out for stray cats, claimed the stink was unbelievable after having used the Purina and going back to off brands.

We tried it. Our little tiny cat lost weight at an alarming rate—from 6.5 to 5.5 lbs! They don't tell you that "Indoor"="Weight Control"!

Both of ours eat Blue Buffalo Spa Select, and my Lord, are they happy, healthy and hyperactive. Our older one (the little one) is 8 years old and you'd think she's a kitten, the way she races around and jumps on things.

huh.gif Huh? My Scoobster is quite the lil fat arce and has been eating this stuff for a year and a half, 1/2 cup am and 1/2 cup pm. His tummy hangs so low it rubs the hair off between his legs. laughing.gif I guess with a small cat that could be a problem, mines just never been small and likely never will be. I think the last weight check he was around 13 pounds.

We have five cats and 4 large boxes - 3 covered and one uncovered all with high sides. Guess which one they use the most? Yep - the uncovered one. Which do they use the least? The biggest covered one. I scoop them out once or twice a day (the uncovered one twice a day) and clean them thoroughly with bleach once a month.

I use different litters but right now I use SCOOP, Arm and Hammer and Tidy Cat -whichever has the best value/best sale at the time - and all seem to work quite well. Tidy Cat has bigger grains and they seem to get spread around farther while the other two have smaller ones but more of them seem to find their way out of the box. I sweep up around the boxes several times daily, especially the one in the bathroom where we walk with bare feet:-).

I have heard you are supposed to have a box for each cat plus an extra one but even when I had 6 cats we only had 4 boxes and had no problems.
