Curious about something or what others have had experiences with on this.
Social Security Number application process.
We waited 2 weeks exactly to go and apply for Social Security number at local field office, which was very easy and no problems, took only 3 minutes or less, only asked to see her passport and I-94 stamp in it to make photocopy then fill out application form.
HERE is problem, Social Security office told me that my Fiancee was not in the Social Security database system or records yet and that we would have to wait until Department of Homeland Security entered the data into their system, which probably that brown envelope she handed over to immigration officer over 2 weeks ago in Minneapolis airport. Thus lady in Social Security office told us that she would leave her application in Social Security system and set it up to automatically match up with her information once Department of Homeland Security finally got around to entering it into the database so Social Security could go ahead and issue card and mail to us, said they did not issue cards anymore right on spot at office, usually mailed out to you within 10 days or less, but now we were told we are at mercy of D O H S and it might be another 2 to 3 weeks or 4 to 6 weeks.
Curious if anyone else has had similar experience and what you did and what was the wait time? And if this is correct what Social Security office told me, or if I will have to continue to call and check with them each day or week to make sure someone is following up on the application for social security card.

We applied just under 2 weeks after POE. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks since she applied for it. Just waiting here, I think a wait of 4 weeks is not uncommon.

Yes that does happen often, waiting 2 weeks after arrival is not a hard and fast rule, the time it takes USCIS to update their SAVE database system can vary. Many report of SSA office holding the application until USCIS updates the system.
Be thankful you had a person at the SSA office who at least understood the K-1 visa, many others report of dealing with people at the SSA office who refuse to issue an SSN to a K-1 visa holder.

Hi,
Same experience I had. I came in from Minneapolis as well. I went to the SSN office about 12 days after my arrival. They didn't have my name in the database either. They did take my information though, and gave me some type of form letter. I received my card in the mail about 10 days after I had been in their office. This was in Arnold, MO...south St. Louis.
I went in after I was married to advise of my new name and get my card changed, however unless you have more than 14 days left on your I-94, they won't do it. I have to wait for my GC now. However, it'll be the same number. When I get my GC, I'll go in and change it, and at that time can request that "not authorized to work...", be taken off of it then.

Happened to me too. Took me around 8/9 weeks to get my card. There's no point worrying about it, it happens and your card will come eventually.

Or you could be like me... come into their office 2 days after entering... be in their system... have a card issued the day you applied... but never get the card =D

I applied SSN 3 days after US Entry, I waited one month and a half to have the SSN.
So, you need to be patient and wait for 4-6 weeks as they said.

We went to the Social Sercurity office today to apply for a SSN... The first person to help us told us that he hadn't done a K-1 in a long time After messing around in the computer for about 2-3 minutes, he asked where was our POE then said he wasn't in the computer yet, and for us to come back in another 10 days. I told him that we were told at POE to come in 10 days after his entry. We went back and forth for about 10 minutes before he finally decided to go ask someone else for some help. He came back and told us to bring the passport and follow him, that he found someone else who could probably help us.... The next man took the passport and didn't ask one question... He did his thing on the computer... and handed us the paper to look over, had my fiancee sign and date and told us the card will come in the mail in ten days. We got the card in the mail 5 days later. Maybe you should try again, maybe the person who tried to process your application didn't know what they were doing, as it was in our case

My fiance and I had the very same experience. He arrived on the April 26th. We went to social security on the following Monday. His information was not in the system. She took the applicationand said it could be a month as well. I knew from looking at signatures that some people received it in two weeks or less. I told her that we would come back in two days to check if the system had updated yet. It did not. We went back Friday. It was updated and she completed the application while we waited. He received it in a week.

hello everybody......as posted before ....we didnt got the SSN even in the friday mail.....so went to SS office and they said it may not be in the system yet .......i said NO i called and they said its their.. and posted already to my address.......so i asked her to check.....and in 5 minutes she handed me two paper .....mentioning my SSN and that i will get the card in mail in two weeks ....and i was just waiting for the SSN so just directly went to take the LEARNErs license....and i passed it with 91 % and so now next week i cld get the License after giving the Test........So my advise to all guys is that just go as many times as you can and dont say the SS officials what the other official said in your last visit.....ok and you may be lucky as the other posters mentioned above........as without SSN we cant do anything here.....
bye for now.......

good for everyone who were smart enough to apply for SSN soonafter POE. as for me, i didn't.
so.. with my I-94 expired, i have no choice but to wait for my EAD to be able to apply for SSN. i just wish i knew better or that i discovered this site sooner. that way i could have gotten things done e.g. get a driver's license or a state I.D. in short, i don't have any form of valid i.d. ergo, i can't do anything. my husband cannot even add me to his insurance just bcoz i don't have my SSN yet. tsk tsk tsk
sorry for the rant. just trying to show how important the SSN is here.

Hello,
I am writing in this thread because of the similarities. I am a little confused. I just called the SSA office (800 number), and was told that my fiancee could not apply for a SSN because of her status. She has been here for nearly 3 weeks, and we are not married yet. She has the I-94 in her passport.
We have conflicting information, so if one of you can offer me information on what we can (or should) do now will be appreciated. What are our next steps? We will not be getting married for another month.
Thanks in advance.

Don't trust calling in. You can go apply for the SSN...K-1 visa right? My fiance arrived in Houston on April 16 and we went to the SSN office here in California on April 20th. She was not in the database yet and we were given a form with a reference number. We have since called twice and they are still waiting for her to be in the system. This Friday will be 5 weeks. So we are just waiting. There is a form on this site...Look in the "Example Forms" or "Downloads" that we printed off to take to the SSN office in case they said we could not apply. The form on this site is a letter stating that K-1 visa holders can apply for SSN. We did not need it...but we took it with us in case. I will try to find the link and paste it here.
Good luck!
