My wife is quite eager, and has already had her police background check done... even though our application hasn't yet made it to the consulate in Guangzhou, China. It was done on March 27. Does anyone know if this will work in a few months when it is a required part of her packet, or must she get another one with a more recent date?

I do not think they are going to do 2 background checks to the same petition. Contact the Consulate and the USCIS about your issue.
All the best.

I take it you mean the "no crime" police report from China. If so, it is valid for one year. It needs to be Notarized at the local government Notarial Office, "gong zheng chu".

To clarify, it is your wife's case file that hasn't made it to the Consulate yet. They will send her the visa application to return to them. You filed a petition. She applies for a visa.

Which means it is the petitioner's file being sent to the beneficiaries consulate with approval from USCIS for DOS to send a visa petition packet to the beneficiary. At this, point, it's not the beneficiaries case file at all.

Semantics. "Case" is generic. Both names would be on the case file. When it leaves NVC, the case is about the beneficiary/applicant.
