Hi I thought this would be interesting, I was always used to using a stick until I lived in the USA, my husband has an Automatic. One day I went to work and parked in a parking space, I could not get the keys out of the car ignition, I started to panic, I sat there nearly in tears wondering if I should phone the AAA for assistance, well this fella parked next to me and I plucked up the courage to ask him if he know anything about cars, he looked in the car and said " mam it helps if you put the thing in park" I could of died, right there and then I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me, so I much prefer to use a stick.

Tried doing a poll on this and nothing came up???? helpsmilie.gif

The first vehicle I learned to drive (age 15) was a 1986 full size GMC pickup with the stick on the collar. After learning to drive that, everything else was a piece of cake. But I prefer automatics of course.
Itsmeitsmeitsree!
The same thing has happened to my husband with the keys. He also uses the handbrake all the time as well, and it's an automatic. Drives me crazy.

Good job.

Prefer stick shift .... it is second nature now and the shifting doesn't bother me at all. Of course, I live in a fairly rural area. I might feel differently if I lived in a city. When I lived in DC, I drove an automatic.

Never learned stick, but it's on my list of things to do. I'm definitely a stick kind of gal. Or maybe not, it makes it harder to smoke...

The first car I drove at 16 was a five speed. Then I have driven an automatic ever since.

This summer, my sister is supposed to reteach me how to drive a five speed. My husband shudders at the thought of having to drive an automatic, so I'll suck it up. Besides, manuals get better gas mileage, etc.
Kath
that one was way funny ...she forget that little bit of information in a hurry lol...

i have driven both automatic and manuals...i learned in the manual to get my licence in oz but my first car was an automatic..either didnt bother me...

my prob with driving over here is remembering that the shift is on the right hand side instead of the left and you pull you pull the seatbelt out over your left shoulder while driving lol..im sure i will get the hang of it lol

thank goodness my hubby's jeep is an automatic...lol

I did learn to drive stick on my dad's pickup truck with no power steering, blink.gif after stalling at the stop sign 5 times i finally shut it off and got out and told him to drive blush.gif lol
Gary has a bad habit of not putting the car in park and then tries to get the keys out.

The car chase is so funny!! Reminds me of ants running around in circles.. laughing.gif

I do a lot of city driving so I prefer the automatic but I did learn to drive a stick. All of our cars right now are automatic though so I don't know if I still know how to drive a stick.

I think the pole function doesn't work with some computers. I tried to do a pole on my computer at work and the same thing happened to me; the pole questions and answers didn't come up. I did a pole at home on my PC and it worked fine.

By the way......Automatic. No more manual.

prefer stick, but can drive automatic it's so easy after being used to stick shift.
homesick_american
I learned to drive on a stick (yep, I'm American...believe it) and I don't like automatics. I'm always slamming on the brakes looking for the clutch when the engine revs get to a certain pitch.

Only if you know how to drive a stick properly. If you don't, they get worse mileage as my novice driver husband found out. laughing.gif

Automatic. It's the American thing to do tongue.gif

I plan to learn stick someday. My grandpa tried to teach me on a stick, saying if I didn't learn on a stick then I'd never learn stick at all, but his car was so nice he almost burst into tears every time I made it do that grindy thing (what's that called again?) and eventually gave up. Sigh...

I think it's better to get someone you're not related to to teach you stick. I taught friends to drive on sticks after their parents had given up on them. It's easier when you don't love the person. whistling.gif They don't get so hurt when you yell at them.

I needed therapy after my dad taught me to drive a stick. crying.gif

I always referred to the 'grindy thing' as stripping the gears. Once or twice won't kill the car, but doing it over and over will...y'know...strip the gears. It's worth learning to drive a stick, cos then you can drive any car. It's great if you're in law enforcement and have to commandeer a private vehicle, or if you happen to join a car theft ring someday. luv.gif Or if you need to drive a drunk friend home in their car. good.gif

I drove a stick for the past 5 years, but then recently switched back to automatic. I love automatic more for it's ease even thought he stick is fun to shift.

I drive an automatic although my husband has promised to teach me how to drive a stick sometime.

Automatic!

Driving is supposed to be FUN, and driving a stick feels like WORK -- shifting up and
down instead of enjoying the ride, not to mention stupid little problems such as coming
to a stop on a hill while trying to keep the car from stalling or rolling backwards. wacko.gif

i used to drive a stick in the Phils., was so scared to drive an automatic, i told my husband not to get me an automatic. So he got me a stick b4 I came to US. For me, a stick is so challenging for a lady driver.

The car doesnt work good on snow, (im scared to drive on snow either), first time! so I told him to get a better one for snow, then we got the automatic.

Same thing happened to me! I didnt want to be late for work, I stopped in the parking lot 5 minutes before the time, i couldnt get the keys out of the ignition. I pressed everything on the remote keys, it was still dark so the car got panicked and alarmed, beep! beep! beep!!..i caiught peoples' attention. I called my husband and explained to me what to do, he didnt know either what was the reason. ( the car was a new one) I was touching this and that, trying this and that in the car while talking to him. He was not a help to me!!..lol, til I figured out that it was not in park. "THAT'S WHY I DIDNT LIKE AUTOMATIC"

There was a time, my step son's car couldnt get out of the snow in the driveway, he was so late for work. He wanted me to drive his car so he could help it push, i said no, i said i havent driven an automatic, i tried but i was really scared so the snow got deeper and deeper til we couldnt make it anymore. He was so mad.

But now, getting used with automatic and I'm loving it. I didnt think that it is so "GRAVY!!"

I think judging by the replies the brits are having most trouble with automatics, see we do not have many here in England, and the norm is to drive a stick. Infact if you pass your driving test in an automatic you can not use a stick, but if you pass your test using a stick then you can drive both. That is or was a rule here.

In my opinion using an automatic transmission is not driving, its like using a go kart, albeit heavier and faster (sometimes tongue.gif) of course it gives you a free foot to rest on the dash or something tongue.gif

so manual.
