Sorry, yet another SS# question!!!

I have to start sorting out my NY teaching certification but for that, along with everything else it seems, I need my Social Security Number!

So, I am moving out there next weekend (yeay!!!) and then will wait a couple of weeks for my information to be input into the 'system'.

Then, do have to wait another couple of weeks, maybe more, for the card to arrive before I can get on with all the other paperwork that needs the SSN#?

I know you can request that SS send the number straight to an employer, but has anyone managed to just get the number before their card arrived? say within a few days, or a week?

My husband entered on Wednesday and they were able to find him in the system on Friday, so it's worth a try at least. They also said that if he really needed to know the number right away he could come back Monday and they would tell him what it was.

But I believe for job applications it's okay to just put "Pending", but I guess actual certification might be a bit different.

Also, once they do find you in the system, I believe the average is about a week or two to receive the card.

Good luck!

Did your husband have to go to one of their offices to find out he was already in the system? SSA has a 1-800 number but I am not sure if they will give out any information on the phone.

I arrived in the US on the 8th, went to the SS office close to us on the 16th. I was in the system already. I wished I had gone earlier. biggrin.gif The SS card arrived after 3 days of wait, in the mail under my maiden name, got married days after, went back to the same SS office for the "change/correction" to my now married name. It has been 6 days so far and still waiting for that corrected card.

So, try your luck, go to the nearest SS office around you! Goodluck. If it doesn't work the first time try another SS office (with the changing of name, usually worked for others).

Hey I definatly have experience with this. I applied and after 2 weeks of not getting the card called the 1-800-772-1213 number. They are very nice there but were not allowed to give a heck of alot of information over the phone. I was able to assertain that a number had been issued the day that I applied. So just call them and then you will need to return to the office to get a printout of your number... Good luck with SSA....

The SSA won't provide a SSN over the phone, but it's worth a visit to the office...perhaps blush.gif

Calling SSA 800# to find out what's going on with your SSN application is a waste of time. You need to go into the office with your documents to have any chance of getting any info or getting anything done.

I called the local SSN office about my card and they said I could go in and get the number if I wanted to, it's usually available to you (in person only at the office), prior to the card being received.
