I never realized, but finallyI do ( kinda late) that I never received my SSN card in the mail after I arrived in the US.
Does anyone know, if they have actually assinged me a number? Can I just go to their office and request for the number?
Did anyone have experience with this? What should I do, since I do need it to get a state ID or driving license.

Do you mean you did not receive any SSN eventhough you checked the box on the form for the k1?
If so, then no wonder. I am not sure what that was for but when you enter on the k1, then you have to go to the SSA to apply for the
SSN. Either you wait until you get married or you do that before you get married. But you have to go back later to change your name.
You have to do that before your I-94 expires otherwise you have to wait until you have your EAD or GC.

Good luck!

sorry did not realize your timeline.
In your case you have to wait until you have your GC because your I-94 should be expired by now.

It is surprising me that you still do not have a SSN yet. How did you open a bank account, get your drivers license and all that stuff?
Even for the joint bank account you will need a SSN.

HappyOne this info is not true.... you do not need a SSN to open a Bank account or be added to an accout to make it joint.. most banks will accept a foreign passport, and it is only a requirment in some states to have a SSN to get a Driving License....

sorry for the wrong information then. That situation at least applied for my situation. When my husband added me to his account I had to show them my SSC. I guess it depends on the bank.

If you now have your EAD, you can apply via form SS-5.

Otherwise, no, the DS-230 application method (Enumeration At Entry) only applies for Immigrant Visa applicants (CR/IR).

If you do not have an EAD, and you (as a K-1) did not apply via SS-5 in your first 76 days in the US, then you need to wait until you've got your Green Card (approval of I-485/AOS).

Yes, i did check both boxes on that form, but yet didn't receive a SSN-card? I should have just automatically have received one, didn't I?

As Meauxna said, the DS-230 only applies for IR/CR immigrant visa applicants.

You came on a K-1, and should have gone to the local SSA office to receive one. You don't automatically just get it sent to you - you have to go in and show that documentation as to why you're eligible, then they send it to you. So when you get your green card, or EAD if you applied for one, then you can get an SSN. Until then, you can't at this point.

You are right, I cam on the K-1 Visa too. When I call them about my SSN they said I had to go to my local Social Security office and then I applied there.

So don't wait for the card, just go to the SSA. But if your I-94 is expired you have to wait for your green card. Sorry.

I hope this will help you.

I know that it is confusing. I checked that box as well when I applied for K1 but it does not have any effect at all if you check or uncheck the box.
As far as I can tell for now, you have to wait for your GC to apply for your SSN. Sorry!

I think as a K-1 you weren't even suppose to fill out the page that had that box on it. No option to check a box on the paperwork that we're suppose to fill out. Sorry you had misinformation and now have to wait. I hope the rest of your journey goes well,

Kristina.. have you done anything to follow up with SSA about your own card? I see you applied the day after you got here.. Feb 1?
That is too long., but I'm afraid you need to follow up in person.

my consulate sent me that one in package 3. And they checked it at the interview and stamped it on approval. unsure.gif
