thanks to all the great information here, our application for a SSN went smoothly - my fiancee and I showed up on the 14th day after her arrival with application, birth cert and passport in hand. Besides the waiting to be called it took less than 10 minutes to be processed! We went to the Pompano Beach FL office after I had earlier read that the Delray Beach office was problematic for someone else a few months ago.

I went to the dade city office yesterday with my wifes passport, K3 visa, birth certificate , marraige papers and no ssn. The lady said the computor is asking for a form number, either I-688B or I-766 which we don't have. I called the lawyer and he said we have to file for EAD and AOS. Since the fees are increasing the 1st of june I guess I'll file next week and beat the increase and maybe then my wife can get a SSN. Really don't want to drive to pompano Beach.
