Full Version: Two questions about the oath ceremony

Hi,

I have two N-445 invitations to the same oath ceremony (one I got handed at the interview and another one I recieved by mail). The second one is asking me to bring, among other things, "Reentry Permit or Refugee Travel Document". I have no such documents. I have never filed for advance parole and never been a refugee.

I am pretty sure that they just check everything (except "other") as standard procedure, and that it just means to bring it in case you have it, but would like some reassurance. Has anyone received the same form with that checked?

Also, is it okay to wear nice jeans and a white shirt with a tie, or would I be woefully underdressed?

Thanks!

As long as you have clothing covering your body and shoes on you feet, no one there is going to care what you are wearing. But remember, no shirt, no shoes, no service.

Cheers!

Dependant on the size of the ceremony you will see people dressed from A - Z. What you mentioned will be perfectly fine and most likely somewhere in the middle.....

I took a small file with various papers in it - NOA's from the very beginning of this journey. Green Card, obviously, and copies of any AP that I obtained over the years.

As for dress. It really is up to you. When I went for my oath ceremony though, it was a very warm day. The ladies all wore summer dresses and the guys wore either slacks and shirt or jeans and short-sleeved shirts. I just remember being pleased that I had made some kind of effort to look presentable that day because there were photographers there - I am guessing from the local paper - and others taking their oath wanted pictures to send family etc.

Anyway, enjoy the day - that's the most important thing!

That's what I thought, thank you.

I may do that also then. Did they ask you for anything you brought but the Permanent Resident Card? (Just trying to determine what to take with me.)

I'll try to look presentable. Thank you!

I just brought my Green Card and that was it. Think of it as a nice dinner type dress wear. Guys pretty much just wore kind of business casual. I wore black dress pants and a black shirt. Women pretty much the same either dressy pants or dresses. You don't have to over dress, but I don't think I saw any jeans though...

I guess I can wear some different pants then. Thank you for your info.

Anyway, I would also figure they just want the card and the checked items about other documents such as "Reentry Permit or Refugee Travel Document" are just in case someone has those, but it does not explicitly say so. I hope no one will ask me for documents that I do not have because they do not apply. Did your form N-445 have that checked?
warlord
Yep same as you. At first I got a little confused with it and found out that's only if you have one. I only had a GC as my AP was given back when I got my Green Card. For my oath they just asked for my card and I gave it to them. An hour or so later after the ceremony I got my certificate which has been sitting at the passport facility somewhere for the past 2.5 months...

I received the same forms when I had my oath and as long as you don't have a re-entry permit you are fine. I wore a suit to my oath but saw many people with jeans as well as Tshirts. I say since it's probably gonna be the most important day of your life might as well dress up for it.

I never had one because I have never filed for it. Anyway, yours and warlord's post are making me relax more about it, thank you.

Alright, you guys here are shaming me into wearing a suit now smile.gif. I just hope the place will have good air conditioning.

Yeah, wear a suit. A t-shirt and jeans is sort of disrespectful. devil.gif Remember, you're becoming an American...a momentous occasion that many people risk their lives to experience, and that people die to protect. good.gif
