Does anyone know when the filing deadline is to mail tax returns to Canada and Quebec?

Our accountant is busy completing Derek's Canadian taxes and says that we have until midnight on April 30th to file both for Canada and Quebec. I have checked websites and that seems to be correct for Canada. But last year Quebec dinged us a late fee because while we mailed them a few days before the due date, they obviously arrived a few days after. I would not be surprised if Quebec was different (read difficult) and did not allow people to have until midnight on April 30th to file, but does anyone know for sure? I doubt that we'd be able to get them there ontime if we mailed them this late, but I figure we could still do the online thing.

Of course I am really hoping that Derek won't owe anything and therefore this whole issue will be moot.

Why would Quebec ding you I always thought Rev. Can. looked after all income taxes

April 30th at midnight. As long as your return is POSTMARKED 30th of April, you should not have been given any late filing fees! My Saskatchewan portion of my Federal Income Tax is attached and placed in the same envelope as my Federal return. Never knew Quebec had seperate filings!

And you're right...if they owe you money, there is no late filing fees.

Quebecs deadline is same as Federal (apr 30)

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Yup, Quebec is the only province that makes people file a separate return, grrrr. Quebec has been a thorn in my side on numberous occasions though - don't even get me started on SAAQ - so I guess I should not be surprised by anything that they do anymore.

Anyway, I finally found on the Revenu Quebec website the following:

QUOTE
Filing deadlines
The deadline for sending your personal income tax return to Revenu Québec is April 30 of each year.

Some differences apply if you are self-employed and you report business income.

If you file your return late, you are liable to a 5% penalty on the balance not paid by April 30. You are liable to an additional 1% penalty for every complete month your return is late (maximum of 12 months).

If you have a balance owing on April 30, interest will be calculated on this balance as of May 1.

So if the last sentence is to be believed, it sounds like they really do want $$$ in hand by the end of April 30. Not just an envelope postmarked the 30th which arrives a few days later.

Am still hoping Derek does not owe any provincial - or federal for that matter - tax. But just in case there are any other Quebecers (sp?) out there thinking they can mail their taxes out on the 30th, a fair warning that you may get dinged like we did last year.

You think we would have learned our lesson last time, lol.

Yea! Our accountant called and this became a very moot issue because Derek is getting a pretty substantial refund. Whoo hoo!

Thanks all.

Off to Florida we go now!
