I love Fufu , dipped in bitterleaf or casava soup. I don't care for dried fish heads and
goat liver / kidney stuff.

I love fufu, and most other Cameroonian dishes. But all those dishes that are made from leaves (eru, etc)...gross!!!

You took the words right out of my mouth. Just something about an entire fish cooked with the eyes intact looking back at me. I can deal with individual fish parts, just not the WHOLE fish at once!! In Ghana they even eat just fish heads (eyes and all!!) I can't take it!!
Jomo's girl
I'll vote for the fish head and eyes as well. Also, mannish water. UGH!!!!!!
Queen Jenn
I love eba, but they put too much fish in the soups. Can't wait till he gets here and cooks me the soups without all the fishy stuff. Also, CAN'T DO GOAT MEAT. YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My husband & I are not into Cassava, wether its Cassava fufu or plain Cassava. As for the fish, I love catfish and most fish except the cheap Tilapia. I loved dried fish as well and I love fish being BBQ. I love pounded yam fufu and garri to be swallowed with egusi soup. I also love pepper soup. As for the meat, I HATE guts of the cow and goat and refuse to eat it. I have seen some of the Nigerians eat insects when I was passing through the rural villages, fried ants, ewwww. I will never dare. I am not into Ogbonno soup either, I think thats whats its called. I do love bitter leaf and vegetable soup with garri.

I haven't had Fufu, but I've had the East African equivalent--ugali. It's not bad!

I hear the sweetest part of the fish are the eyes, but I never ate them. The key to eating a whole fish is to use your hands.

Goat meat is great, as long as you emphasize that you want a lean cut. In East Africa anyway, you can usually select the piece of meat you want hacked off by the butcher and you can insist that all the fat get cut off. Then it's great! Goat kidneys and testicles, however, are disgusting, and I won't eat a liver, whether it's from a chicken, a goat or elsewhere.

I don't care for chicken gizzards, which is a problem because they're always offered to a male guest, and I was often a guest. At first it was a problem, but when you pass them on to the eldest male in the room, he's certainly not going to turn them down.

I've had really good matumbo ("stomachs"), but in general I just don't like the thought of it or the thin, twisty intestines--no matter how well they're cleaned!

I wish I had tried the sweet white ants while I was in Kenya, but I never really found a good opportunity.

You guys need to be more adventurous! smile.gif

That could definitely be it--you've gotta try it with 'sauce gumbo" - okra sauce. I'll admit, it looks a little like snot, but tastes delicious. Fufu really isn't bad with any other sauces, but you're right, anything with eru tastes bad!!!

Although the fish I had in Kenya (usually tilapia) was generally very good, and even better if you could find mudfish, the worst dish I had in Kenya was a fish dish, called omena, which essentially is fried whole minnows, which I think had first been dried, and then mixed with a kind of tomato-based stew. I had one bite and that was more than enough for me. The crunching of the head and still-forming fish bones was bad enough, but the smell and taste was just over the top. My fiancee made the mistake of having a bit more than I did, out of respect for our friend who prepared the dish, and paid for it by having to run to the choo all night. We still have a joke today about that dinner. The accompanying dishes were ugali and sukuma wiki (collared greens), which are basically the staple starch and vegetable dishes in most of Kenya, and those dishes never tasted so sweet as when we could choose them over the omena.

That reminds me...I can never get used to bush meat, either. Not knowing the source of what you are eating is a little freaky to me. When I was in Ghana, I had to politely turn it down several times.

When I was in Africa, I thought I could never get used to eating any of the stuff down there, but I loved the things my fiance family served, never turned one dish down. However, I never eaten bush meat. I always wondered what type of meat it was. Anyway, I could never eat goat meat or anything wild like that. sorry. Thankfully, my fiance always made sure goat meat wasn't on the menu.no0pb.gif

I also loved and ate all Liberian food. I thought it would be nasty, but all of the dishes were really good and flavorful. The only thing I remember turning down (refusing to try) was some their version of tuna salad...it looked and smelled WAY too "fishy". I just don't like fish, period.

LOL, I had a REALLY BAD run-in with goat meat in Jamaica. We went down to visit my grandmother and she cooked "goat-foot soup." It was literally thin brown water with a big hoof sitting in the middle. I had to politely decline on that one...ever since then the idea of goat meat makes my stomach church. It had a really strong smell, also.

I've had lamb and don't know what to think about it. I'm kinda on the fence about it. I don't dislike it, but I don't like it, either. Maybe it has something to do with my idea of lambs being cute, fluffy, and sweet. Not edible! lol.

I have nothing against tilapia--i think it tastes great and I dont think its all that cheap...lol. As for Ghanian Cuisine, I am not big on snails...but I love, plaintain, garri, fufu, light soup, ground nut soup, waa-che (beans and rice), suya, nkatie burger peanuts, fried plaintain chips yummy)

The thing that is "similar to a large rat") am guessing its BUSH MEAT!--

--I did try that when I was in Nigeria and it is called Bush Meat..its not as bad as it looks..When I saw a program on tv about West African and finally saw what the animal looked like where bush meat came from--I felt sick to my stomach!

I thought bush meat was just that... any meat that they could find... in the bush!!!

Most Ghanaian foods I've had are very good. While I was visiting my fiance, he had a family member prepare, some kind of stew. I don't know the name, but it was made with palm oil, greens, hard boiled eggs(whole), it probably had other things in it. But I disliked it a lot! Fufu is good, jollof, a lot of the stews. Never tried kenkey, or bush meat(doesn't sound good). By the way shitto, is very good, nothing bad about it, just spicy, adds a good flavor to your food.

I still don't think I can eat goat comfortably. I wouldn't care if goat was braised with a gourmet sauce. I just wouldn't be able to get past that dreaded acquired tasted.

I haven't had fufu yet. unsure.gif But I agree with the fishy stuff. I OCCASIONALLY eat some tuna fish. And I will eat fish in Hawaii (there is one called Ono) but it has to have been caught that morning. BUT NO FISH HEADS, and as a general rule, no fish in soup. blech!!

This post made me hungry. I first traveled to Ghana when I was 17 and lived with a family there. I fell in love with the food...so flavorable and spicy. Shito, Banku, Kenkey, wakye, contomere greens, kelewele, gari, all the soups - groundnut, okru, palmnut oh my goodness its so good. Fufu is ok, not my foavorite but I'll eat it. Fufu and ugali are very different...fufu is pounded cassava and plaintain, ugali is corn flour cooked to a stiff porridge, which is also eaten in west africa but usually they make it more flavorful by adding fermented cassava flour. Im not a fan of fish heads and I dont eat meat but I dont think I would like goat or any kind of organs, even if I did. East African food is good, but I think I like West African better.
Kanyiri
Bush meat is anything you find in the bush: rabbit, squirrels, etc. There is one particular large rat - called the grasscutter - that is most likely the one everyone is referring to. I've had it, and it wasn't too bad. It tasted kinda like goat meat to me.

i too LOVE West African food! i'm from the Caribbean so much of our food is similar to/based on African dishes. so if its meatless bring it on, Ghanaian, Nigerian, Gambian, Senegalese soups, stews, jollof rice, fufu, conomere, kenkey, plantain, gari, wackye, fried yam, boiled yam....all this week, i've been craving banku, pepper and fish! i love eating with my hands and sharing the same dish as my beloved. and my Ghanaian crew/family is always so pleasantly surprised with how enthusiastically and comfortably i dig in at mealtime!! i've been known to gain a few pounds with every visit actually!! i must say however i had an interesting experience pretending to eat a not so lovely snail soup offered by a lovely hostess, lol. but overall, i think its a wonderful and important way to really get to know a place, a people, the language and a culture by eating the traditional dishes with folks everyday. i've also shared in some of the cooking too. these days, food culture has also become a way for mylove and i to bond over the distance, i always i ask him "baby, what did you eat today?" and he's like "oh your favorite---fish and banku!" or "i'm about to get some wackye from such and such place, remember that spot?" or "the lady who sells roast fish on the main road was asking about you." heart.gif and of course we've already discussed that he's to bring as much Fante kenkey and black pepper as he can carry when he gets that visa!

peace and smiling fish-heads to all!

Gumfu (whatever way that is spelled) ain't for me. Other than that, I liked most of the Ethiopian dishes I've tried thus far. Well, I have reservations on this intestines stew. Not so much the taste - that's quite alright - but the texture doesn't sit well with me. no0pb.gif

Yes, something about the texture of intestines that throw me off, too. lol.

I eat this food alittle but I'm not 100% used to it.....its call Kitfo.....basically beef tartare......rare ground beef and very popular in Ethiopia. The first time I tasted and I said, "Are you sure this is cooked." My husband said, "yes, its cooked." But when I looked at it and tasted it it just seemed like raw meat to me. Later I realized it REALLY was rare ground beef.

Lord the foods we eat for love and relationships.
