I have never listened to Imus. But I am curious what you would have done with him. I thought his remarks were wrong, but I wouldn't have fired him. There are so many other "shock jocks" out there doing and saying things even worse. Ironically, the women's basketball team were the ones who seemed to care less about what he said than all of Imus's critics. So what do you think?
Jenn!
I think his apology was necessary and sufficient.
A.J.
If I ran things, I would have fined him. That's what we normally do to media outlets in this country when they "break the rules". Calling black women "nappy" should have resulted in a fine large enough to create a significant disincentive to ever doing so again. Same goes for calling women "hoes". Fine 'em, let the consequences modify their behavior. If they can no longer retain an audience after the voluntary behavior modification, let the free market fire them until they figure out how to be entertaining and civilized at the same time.
Nagishkaw
Can him. Now he can get busy writing a book called, " How Dare I even Think Those Things ".

Don Imus was hired because he said the things he did. Bottom line was money. This time Don Imus was fired for the same reason- money.

Caladan
He was losing advertisers hand over fist, so the decision to fire him would be financial.

I wouldn't have hired his act in the first place.
Nessa
you don't have an option for who the f**k is Imus tongue.gif
~Chad~
I don't feel sorry for him though, he probably has the kind of money I can only dream about.
Fuzzness
sure he has freedom of speech. that doesnt mean he doesnt have to pay the consequences for his actions.

Freedom of speech means there can't be consequences for speech.

But this is not a free speech case. free speech laws prevent government from limiting speech. Private companies are not.

His fatal mistake was going on the appology tour - he had no ratings and drew too much attention fot the networks to let it blow over...I mean, go on the Rev.Al radio show and let 'you people' slip out? come on..

He's got plenty of fcuk you money..so it doesn't really matter..

if al shapton and jessie jackson wouldnt have made such a fuss about it nothing would have been done. if it would have been a nobody like me they would have laughed in my face and told me go sit down.

anyway i think he should not be fired over it. i didnt really like his show much but i dont think he should be fired. god knows howard stern is more worse then he is.

anyway...al sharpton and jessie jackson call themselves reverands...havent they heard the phrase...forgive those who tresspass against us? they didnt forgive they went for blood.

What do you guys think about Pravda's report that the real reason the establishment went after Imus is because he was threatening to reveal their 'secrets' about 9/11? Is Imus a closet 'truther'????

They fired the guy, they didn't put a 'hit' on him... I fail to see how being fired (and presumably pissed off about it) would cause someone to remain silent about 'secrets'?

“Nappy is in the lexicon of racism in the same category as pickaninny—an old Southernism which used to be used to describe a small African American child—and n i g g e r,” said Anne Soukhanov, U.S. editor of the Encarta Webster’s Dictionary and a veteran columnist on language.

Basically nothing:
  • How many stations can you access on the radio (I'm sure it's a lot more than 1)
  • Timings -- AFAIK, no program is on 24/7/365
  • Plus, there is "freedom of speech" (doesn't mean you can trash the OWNER of the radio station on it, but...DOES mean that the speaker is free to prove self as fool)

I don't believe that Jackson or Sharpton should be called reverend. I agree with a previous post - what about FORGIVENESS? Imus is a jerk and he says nasty things about LOTS of people. That's what he gets paid to do. Jackson and Sharpton took it way too far.

All that "Rev" means is that they completed some courses in theology (somewhere) with passing grades; Sam Donaldson (who proclaims himself atheist) could easily qualify for such a title.

People are and should be held to account for their speech and behaviour. I think that's what happened in this case - though it seems the punishment rather outweighed the crime, seeing as the guy apologised, and was also forgiven by the people he insulted.

Considering also the likes of Mel Gibson and Michael Richards whose racist rants were rather more substantial than the ill-advised remarks by Imus.

I'm really surprised they fired him. On Thursday, his final day on air and more than a week
after his racist remark, his radio audience had more than doubled. Controversy sells.

So what if he offended someone? Big deal. As a white person, I find the "BET" channel
extremely offensive and racist. Do I keep watching it? No.
Jabberwocky
I was shocked he even was a radio personality after I first saw his show live on CNBC. He mumbles into the microphone while some schmuck acts as his faithful sidekick. He should have been mumified years ago.
*Marilyn*
I was watching Oprah yesterday and they were talking about all of this...

One guest she had on made a valid point.... he said something like that they should take some of the responsibility for this too... because a lot of the Hip-Hop music calls women all sorts of names etc.....

and why is it seem to be ok for them to do that but when a white person does, they are all up in arms....

I don't think he should be fired because he said those things. I think he should be fired because people won't listen and advertisers won't advertise and he becomes a losing proposition.

If he's fired for being an ###, he'll go on to his next life on satellite radio like Howard Stern. If he's fired because no one listens to him, no one else will hire him.

But I can respect the attitude of MSNBC that "we fired him because our employees let us know they felt that they couldn't continue to work with him."
