I've been given a sheet by the (not particularly) helpful people at the military passport office, with regard to DCF application in Frankfurt, and they included a list of the vaccinations I need to have proof of having. There are 3 and I think they are TB, MMR and Varicella. It mentions you need to have proof of having them which I have asked for at my doctor's surgery in the UK and they said they could not provide me with written proof.

Is it usual when going for the medical that comes before your interview to be able to have these vaccinations at the same time? I read that you can have some kind of blood test to check you have the relevant antibodies but I also read that that's just as much hassle and cost as having the vaccinations again.

Can anyone help me clear this up inside my head?

Hi I'm afraid unless your parents kept proof of vaccinations your GP will have no record of them. They only started doing this in the UK in the last 15-20 yrs or so. They don't vaccinate against Varicella (chickenpox) in the UK. Do they have NHS in Germany? The easiest thing to do is to get the vaccinations MMR & TD and if you had Chickenpox as a child then Varicella isnt necessary. When I had my medical in London I was asked if i had had chickenpox which I had and the Dr just marked it off on the vaccination form.I do know that to get MMR and TD privatley costs £60.00.

Thanks Adele. Glad it wasn't just my doctor's surgery being annoying. I was just pondering this and I do have access to a US doctor here via the military, I may call them up and explain about the vaccinations and I suppose they might consider doing them for me. Otherwise I am sure the doctors in Frankfurt who do the medicals are used to people having to ask to be re-vaccinated (for a price!)

Ask if the military doc can have titres done for the MMR and Td. This may be covered under your insurance or what have you.

Don't jump the gun on the vax....

My DAH is a UKC and we did our case in Greece. We deciphered the vax supplement and thought he would need a lot of jabs, but the doctor interviews the beneficiary and, based on where they were born/raised, adapts the shots.

The only thing he wound up needing was a tetnus update, based on coming from the UK etc, the doc knew what shots he'd had as a child.

It might be worth it to determine how many shots you will really need before letting them jab with you everything under the sun - Will didn't have full immunization records and we were worried he'd need a LOT of shots (yuck) but he only ended up needing one!
