Where's my manners.

Happy Easter to all. May you enjoy the bun and chesse, ackee and bammy in all thier glory. May this day be as meaningful for you as your Jamaican hubby because when Thanksgiving comes , they are going to be just as excited for you. And if your hubby does not realize that there is no Easter Monday and Tuesday here in the US, just think of it as the day after Thanksgiving and make him/her bun and cheese again and send them off to work.

Happy Easter to you and yours. In case I forget, Happy Easter Monday and Happy Easter Tuesday!!!!

The only beef I eat in Jamaica is if we go out to a really good restaurant. No burgers at Burger King either.

Ochi had the best whopper ever!!! I can't eat whoppers here anymore, I tried! blink.gif

Every thing taste different here. i jus came up last month and i brought jamaican seasonongs so i could cook with them but the food jus does not taste the same. My husband doesn't any for me to eat because he knows i won't like it. So all i eat is hot dogs, fish and chicken. But my motherin law cooked some beef for dinner the satyrday after i came up and surprizingly it was good, tastes jus like beef back home maybe because she is jamaican so she knows how to do it jamaican style

Have fun at the concert. I saw Etta James on the list and I love her song "AT Last" we probably won't got to that either. Hubby will say how much does that cost we can't afford it. That is what he what he said about Capleton and then said he disliked him. Is Richie Spice coming here?

I've tried to be open minded about the food. I even tasted a piece of deer meat. Yuck! But to be honest, I am worried about being in the USA and changing from my relatively healthy diet of fish, chicken and greens to all the cholesterol-laden foods and becoming over-weight and more prone to things like heart disease.

I'm sorry, but a big old slab of medium rare, blood-oozing steak on my plate with eggs for breakfast on a sunday morning is a bit too much. Jay's feelings were hurt but in the end he understood. I miss my callaloo and saltfish with plantain (and or porridge) on a sunday morning.

blush.gif

Damien gained a lot of weight his first six months here. It was hard to sit home with nothing to do but eat and watch TV. I got him hooked on fast food when he start got here...that was a terrible habit of mine. We're making healthier choices now...besides the festival and ice cream we ate last weekend blush.gif . We also go to the gym together.

I'm not a great cook so I don't attempt to cook Jamaican food. I would like him to cook more and teach me.

He won't touch any American breakfast food.

Evan can't wait for my "American" cooking to fatten him up. good.gif His adoptive family was American and he loved the cooking vs. Jamaican food. He say Jamaican food is ladden with grease and un healthy. I wonder what kind of American food he grew up eating. unsure.gif

Meaning that when others on here have talked about failed relationships and "vets" that have separated from their spouses they are talking about specific people and specific marriages...not just a blanket assumption or generalization.

I agree with what Jamie said -- a lot of them did get on with their lives -- I think the point "we" were trying to get across was that "we" wish they would come back to VJ and tell their stories. Some of those stories might help someone....someday. Not saying you or anyone in particular......but I don't think it's anyones business to air someone else(s) "dirty laundry" on an open forum. On the other hand -- there are plenty of the "veterans" who's realtionships are going just fine and they don't need the support of VJ right now. That is true....

A lot of us have made very good friends here on VJ -- and we do keep in close contact with people some of the "newbies" never even heard of.

Question about the interview??????????????????????

Do they talk to you through a window and does your evidence have to be small enough to slide through?

Just wondering if I should put my pictures in an envelope or bring the two big photo albums.

We had a photo album and Andre didn't say anything about it not fitting...I have heard of people bringing big stuff without problem...plus they can always come around and get it from you if it doesn't fit. I would leave it in an album just for ease and it makes it look nice.

just got back from the Bio Appt....it was a success laughing.gif our appt was for at 9 we got there a little before 8 and we were able to go in(it was weird...it was inside a old mall..almost missed it...some advice when you have your appt. go onto USCIS.gov and look for the office...usually they will give some land marks near by...) and mike filled out the form and they even excepted the other bio appt letter for the 11th...whole thing to about 35 mins....just hope the rest it goes so easy!!!!

BUNS and CHEESE ---

Yum, let’s all have a hot cross bun. Jamaicans probably remember the universal ditty associated with the delicious treats—
Hot cross buns, hot cross buns
One a penny, two a penny
Hot cross buns;
If you have no daughters, give them to your sons.
One a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns.

Sung quite a bit at Easter time, the song reminds many of childhood delights, but most people probably don’t realize that hot cross buns pre-date the Jamaican bun and cheese and led to their popularity. Sometimes called Easter buns, they are a big part of Jamaican culture, just like several other representative foods such as saltfish or ackee. The concept dates back to ancient Babylon, when cross buns were offered to Ishtar, the pagan queen of heaven. Ancient Greeks made similar cakes to honor the moon.

The tradition found its way to England, where cross buns were eaten on Good Friday, with the cross symbolizing the crucifixion of Jesus. When the British captured Jamaica, of course they brought the custom to the island. Over time though the English version of the cross bun transitioned to the Jamaican version, with some key differences.

Jamaica’s version is made with molasses, while the buns from England were made with honey. In Jamaica, you eat the bun with cheese, a combination that has become ingrained in island culture. British custom has waned when it comes to eating hot cross buns as fasting food on Good Friday, but in Jamaica the practice is as prevalent as ever. Today the custom is seen as more Jamaican than British. And eating cheese is now a year-round practice, while the bun and cheese dish is prevalent primarily during the Easter holiday.

The country has a history of adapting foods from other cultures to please Jamaican palates. Rice, originally from China and India, has been mixed with red peas to make a unique Jamaican dish. While a similar dish is prepared in Trinidad, the two are different, and while Jamaicans call it rice and peas, Trinidadians name it peas and rice. You say tomato, I say tomahto. Either way, make sure to sample a hot cross bun at Easter time to see why they are so very popular.

Happy Holiday to all heart.gif

BUNS and CHEESE ---

Yum, let’s all have a hot cross bun. Jamaicans probably remember the universal ditty associated with the delicious treats—
Hot cross buns, hot cross buns
One a penny, two a penny
Hot cross buns;

HAPPY EASTER VJ FAMILY!!!

Jax - I only like the small round spice bun because it has no raisins...don't really like the HTB loaf. Love the cheese.

Enjoy the holiday. We're off to church with Grandma.

I am just lookin for things to do because I will be free all of July and part of August

We went to the Caribbean Festival -- I believe it was the end of June -- it's in Washington Park (right by the University of Chicago) -- that's where we saw Beenie Man. It was really nice -- they had a lot of restaurants there selling food and booths selling "crap." Worth going to if someone good is playing.

Love the cheese.

Okay -- talk to me about the cheese. We bought a "container" at the African store -- we already threw it away so I can't tell you who made it -- Roy HATED it. I had to go out and get "hard" cheese -- I bought a "brick" of Colby...... WHAT kind of "American" cheese can you compare the "Jamaican" cheese to. He said the Colby was just fine.....but I would love to get some more suggestions.

Happy Easter

Mindy how do you find details on that Festival at the end of June? Where should I look?

I say velveta cheese is more like JA cheese. Dwain said we must always have JA cheese around. Oh my goodness... I like the cheese but worry about my health eating it the cholesterol.

Wow so the weather is more like Christmas than Easter it is going to be cold hunting for eggs with my cousin wacko.gif

HAPPY EASTER !!!

We went out to Giant (a grocery store) yesterday and they have a great bakery section. We bought some Rum Bun and a block of Colby cheese. Craig was WAAAAAY excited !!!! He said the only thing different on the bun is that it had white frosting on it, but he liked the frosting on it better.

It's crazy in the past 7 yrs that I have been going to Jamaica for Easter, I've never had bun and cheese.

Hope everyone is having a great day !!!

Oh Wow Thanks Mindy!!! I saw Maxi Priest playing to so I told my proffesor. The guys usually call her the day they play in Chicago and expect her to get there on such short notice. Dwain doesn't like the guys in Maxi Priest too much. We grew up with all these musicians so I understand. I just found out 2 guys that I taught in High School now tour for Junior Kelly. So I will be looking out if they are coming to town.

I have used FedEx in the past to Mobay -- he picked it up at their office in town. I <believe> it cost me $30.00 for "Letter Express" (I was only sending two pages to him....) They guaranteed it would get there in three business days -- it got there the next day.
