I got a new passport last year and changed it then, I had to go the passport place because my citizenship certificate was rubbed out and of course I got a new immigration officer when trying to enter JA on a previous trip who was trying to give me a hard time. I had the marriage register from the minister not the one from kingston but they used it.

ds-230 - I've never been to kingston and wanted to go, i'm just dreading the ride and his car has no a/c but i will talk to him and see.

Thanks for the info...so I will need to send in the marriage certifcate...it doesn't matter that it's from JA? Do you think they're going to require add'l evidence?

No it shouldn't matter

Congratulations to eric on the green card and to Belwin Mills on the visa. good.gif

As far as passports and things, how does it work if I hyphenate? Do I still have to change all my legal documents? What about if I don't hyphenate and do [firstname] [maidenname] [marriedname]? I don't want to do away with my own name, I'd still like to be able to use it.

I don't know if it's still possible but other couples were completing the form online and sending to their SO or had them downloading the form themselves. And when they went to the appointment they would drop off DS-230 part 1 so the Embassy could start the processing for scheduling an interview.

I just spoke to him, he said he could courier it to the embassy. I'm going to be in JA on Saturday so I could just bring it. So should he courier it or should we go to the appt we have for next thursday in kingston?

That is a great idea. It looks very good. Safe travels on Saturday.

I need to go look at airfares now to bring hubby here to Chi town.

It looks good if I show up to the appt to get a form? Or I guess we could submit the form then. Me and my oversized stomach. I carry big, people think i'm nine months even though I'm only 7 and when I tell them I'm seven months, they follow that up with oh it's twins. anyway I digress. It's a 2 hour drive to Kingston. We had planned to go to do his police certficate because we thought be now we would have our interview date.

You can still get the police cert now. It's valid for 6 months.

Ok, I have a question.
What did you/are you going to do about money??
Is he going to have an allowance?
Are you going to just give him an extra bank card?
If you do, are you/do you put a limit on what he can spend?
Have you thought about how much he should contribute when he gets a job? Or how did you work that out??

I will still be getting paid full pay for like 18 months after I move, but have told him he'll have to take my cards, I am hopeless about saving money, I waste every penny I earn lol...Even going to have him change my Paypal password (I'm an Ebay addict too!)
So what we're going to do is sit down and work out how much I'm allowed to squander per month, which will be put in my account which I'll have a debit card for.
Once I start working, we're thinking about keeping the squandering money the same and just saving whatever the surplus is from my wages...Obviously this will work because he doesn't spend much at all and I know I have a problem with spending wisely...

We talked a little bit about this, but not with specifics. Mostly about how he will feel having to rely on me financially. It's probably a discussion that we should have more in depth. My assumption has been that he won't really need much money in the beginning. He doesn't drive, so he wouldn't be going anywhere without me. He has a debit card of mine right now and I would probably just let him continue to hold on to that one and keep money in that account for him. Probably add his name to the account so that he can begin establishing that history.

As far as what he will contribute when he is working, it is my expectation (probably incorrect wacko.gif ) that the majority of his income will go to paying our expenses. I have a tendency to stock my household so that there is no want for anything, so again, he shouldn't need much extra cash. There are things that will be included in our expenses, like sending money back home, saving for both of our children and saving towards future goals. I expect that when we go out, it won't be him or me that is paying the bill, but both because our income will be combined. When he has an income. biggrin.gif

All of this is probably a little naive, but I guess we'll just have to see how it goes and adjust accordingly. Praying for peaceful financial negotiations. laughing.gif

Hi everyone! I hope all of you all had great weekends and Mother's Days. I have a question: For those of you who have gotten married or have been married to your SO for a while now, did you change your name on your passport? If so, how did that work out? Will they keep your old Passport? After I get married in Oct I'm not sure what I will do as far as name changes/documents go...I don't know how much of a hassle it will be...but I want to know if I'm going to have a hassle going back and forth to JA for the next 2 years if the last names don't match up...

PS: Eric, check your PM please!

We got married back in Oct and I haven't changed my name. Planning on doing later after our US wedding. Once you "officially" change your name I think it would be advised to changed every document to prevent any hassles in the future. My sister use both her maiden & married name for personal reasons, however, when she travels to JA she uses the name that is in her passport. The plane ticket and the name in the passport has to match if not a marriage cert is required if the passport still shows the maiden name.

I kind of thought that too until he went to his first mall and his eyes grew wide. In the beginning, he will want everything and NEED everything (shoes are a big thing) and you will have to reign them in without feeling like you are denying them anything.

I don't live like that (well, okay, I have a lot of shoes...) and I certainly don't intend for him to live like that. While I have a lot of clothes, I don't do name brands. And if I can't afford it for myself and my children, I can't afford it for him. If he wants name brand and shoes to match every outfit, he'll have to wait for his own income. I can't justify buying him things that I don't buy for my children.

I did it like this.....if he wanted something really bad, it first of all, had to be on sale. Then, we had to budget it in. I got him hooked on Old Navy clothes cause I work there and get a discount on top of watching for clearance sales. For basics, he will not pay more then a few dollars for anything and loves when I got him all those t-shirts for 38 cents a piece. When he saw the 78 cent flip flops, he nearly cried. He's really funny cause he will go shopping after work (the bus picks him up and drops him at the mall) and he'll say "I really want this pair of shorts; but it's $40 right now. I know you said in July, they will be going on clearance. I'm waiting for them." When we got our tax return refund back, he got $100 to blow on whatever he wanted....he ended up with a pair of shoes, a pair of "slippers" and a Timberland belt. Just a few weeks ago, I felt bad cause there was some pair of shoes on clearance he wanted; but we weren't paid for another week. I told him he could get them next week. Of course, they were gone by then. The brakes.

The point of all this is that they will be like a kid in a candy store. You have to diplomatically tell them no. And, don't kid yourself into thinking it will be easy. No matter what they say, they will not get it until they live it.

First you will need to submit the I-130 and G-325A forms along w/the necessary documents to USCIS. Once you recv your approval your case will se sent to the NVC. At that stage the I-864 and DS-230 part 1 along w/your spouse biographical page will be needed then. Also if he doesn't have access to email then you might want to bring the DS-3032 (Choice of Agent) form.

I'm not sure how often you will be traveling to JA (after the wedding) but it may be a good idea to bring ALL the forms and have him sign them. Make sure he doesn't date them so you can once it's due w/o paying add'l mailing charges.

Thanks...I know this is WAAAAYYY premature since we can't even file again until Oct. of 2009, but I just wanted an idea of the order of things...I'm not really pressed right now about getting anything done, just wanted an idea of how it would go...unfortunately I will have many many trips to JA between now and then....unless, by God's grace some miracle occurs and they actually happen to take a real look at our case again... sad.gif

Caution about chaning your name on the passport...i sent mine in to get changed the 14th of march...still have not gotten in back yet...because of the increase of everyone needing a passport for the regular process it is taking anywhere from 10-14 weeks....if you do it express(more mulla) i think it is like 6 weeks or something like that...you will need to check the website...yes you need 2 passport pics along with a certified marriage cert. and send in your old passport...and i think it is like 60 something for it....

If you show proof of your departure, you can be issued a passport like next day, but for an extra $40
you know when i got my daughters passport who is only 20mths they sent one of her pictures back, but they still require you to send in 2

JLVR - you have to legally change your name hyphenated or not. I didn't drop my maiden name. All I had to show was my marriage certificate when I applied for my passport.

tee hee hee laughing.gif Thanks ladies!! Keep buying! I'm addicted to ebay too - but I want to sell everything! yes.gif I've already sold a gold belly button ring ($63) a pair of silver boots ($15) a pair of black boots ($36) and some concert tickets for Gwen Stefani that I had extras of. I need to find more stuff to sell!!

I have SOOOO many clothes that I can't take with me, just in the process of selling them all. I also sell the clothes my son has grown out of.
I love designer brands but not willing to spend the money for them in the normal shops.
My favorite brands are Burberry and Moschino but they cost a FORTUNE in the states (they still cost loads here though)
Just bought a GORGEOUS Burberry shorts and shirt outfit for the baby, brand new with tags, for £17!!!!
Made a lot of money these past two weeks, my Paypal account is £150 in credit!!

Was thinking of selling photo restoration services on Ebay once I get to the states, will see how that works out.
Ebay can also be good if you have time at home, if you know the prices of certain goods, you can make good money buying it cheap and relisting it for a profit.

PM me your Ebay user name and store! I'd love to get some stuff from you (I love the fashion from UK, I rarely buy anything here unless it comes from NY via Internet)

Congrats to all those that are finally moving upward on their visa journeys
Eric - does your wife like the Jamaican Internet channel bundle I mentioned here earlier?
Those with wedding dates - heart.gif
And happy belated Mothers Day to everyone

what shipping method does everyone use to ship packages to ja? I have always used the regular postal service which is reasonably priced but takes forever to get there. I want to send a package to get there in no more than a week...but don't want to pay a ridiculous amount of money...any thoughts?

Peaceful financial negotiations can happen. Damien is very good with paying bills and saving money. Me, on the other hand whistling.gif
He chose what bills he wanted to pay which are the utilitles, phone bill, cable bill, 1/4 of the rent and his personal bills (credit card and cell phone bills). He also put money aside for entertainment - movies, concerts, trips, etc. This work for us instead of me dictating and "taking his money". We both put money into our joint accounts and have seperate accounts where our checks are direct deposited. He loves doing his own banking wacko.gif which is fine with me because he should be responsible for maintaining bills.

Damien wanted to buy everything in every store when he start got here. We went to the mall every weekend...sometimes 2-3 malls a day to window shop. He is also a brand name and shoe "ho". But he works hard everyday and don't waste money so I can't complain when he buys something nice for himself.

You do not need to wait until Oct 2009 to apply again. Your reason for denial of the visa will not stop the I-130 from being approved. Watch the timelines and time your application so it gets approved 3 months before the excludability expires. This should give you an appointment just after the 3 years are up. No wasted time.

I was wary of using the post office because I tried sending something priority mail and it took weeks. But someone here suggested that maybe I didn't use the right envelope and that must have been it because the next time I sent something I used Global Express and it got there in under a week. It cost me under $30 with signature. It would have cost much less than that but I wanted the signature. It was a light envelope, though, only a few pages.

I'm reading and realizing that you said packages, so you may be talking about a box or something like that. It might still be the same time frame, though.

Hi everyone! I hope all of you all had great weekends and Mother's Days. I have a question: For those of you who have gotten married or have been married to your SO for a while now, did you change your name on your passport? If so, how did that work out? Will they keep your old Passport?

I changed mine cause I only want to fill out only one custom's form (must have same last name) and want to go through the National's line in immigration. Thought it would be easier. You cannot use the old one....they punch something through it to render it useless and then send it back to you with the new one. It was one of the easiest things I did. Mailed back in something like 3 weeks or so.

I still have my same original passport. I just had it ammended to change my name to my new married name. It didn't cost me a dime! Just had to fill out a paper and send in my passport. It came back w/ some writing on the last page "ammended on xxx (date) to Rhonda ___ ____" Easy good.gif

I kind of thought that too until he went to his first mall and his eyes grew wide. In the beginning, he will want everything and NEED everything (shoes are a big thing) and you will have to reign them in without feeling like you are denying them anything.

Yes, Tony loves his name brands too wacko.gif He has to have Nike shoes, Reebok shoes, Puma shoes, Adidas shoes, Timberland boots, ....... Then if he wears a Nike shirt, he has to wear his Nike shoes with it laughing.gif He is soooo funny.

I try to get Tony to shop at Old Navy too. Their prices are pretty good - even though I don't get an employee discount tongue.gif When he first got here, if he wanted something really bad, I would buy it for him for his birthday or x-mas. I told him if that's what you want, but that's ALL you're getting no0pb.gif For his first x-mas I bought him a $120 pair of Timberlands! SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!!! mike is still like that...being here for almost 6 months....he still needs this wants that....i got home from work late last night and we greated by a ad for nike shoes and him saying i want this i need these shoes....and it just starts to get at you after a while cause when will he get it that he does not need these things and does not have to have 7 pairs of shoes...or a pair of jeans for every single day of the week...it just starts to get to you when every day you hear the same things over and over again

Uh oh...... I have hanging head in shame....70 odd pairs of shoes, at least 40 handbags (to match them of course!), rough estimate maybe 30 pairs of jeans etc etc......

And stuff here is EXPENSIVE!!
When I come to the USA I go crazy, EXACTLY like a kid in a candy shop, so much choice!!
It's really going to be different living there because I'm a real bargain hunter and every time I see a bargain I HAVE to buy it, in the USA I'll be bombarded with what I think are bargains : wacko.gif

On another note, I'm slightly apprehensive about a new complex we might be moving to. I can't drive (SHAMEFUL I know!) and the complex he's looking at is two miles from the mall/bus stop etc.
He says by the time I'm ready to start working I'll know how to drive, but it's kinda scary being 'trapped'....He starts work at 4pm, so while he'll be at home to take me anywhere I want to go, feel like I'll be losing my independence....And the 'what ifs'....What if I'm too scared to drive etc etc....
He says he'll look at other complexes, but he says this is by far the best, I love the idea of a pool, gated access etc....and he says none of the others in the area have those amenities....
So which is more important, being able to take the bus if I want to or having all those comforts....Choices choices huh?

Well back in April I applied for a job with the county sheriffs office as a records specialist. I went in for civil service testing yesterday (which was pretty hard honestly) but I passed everything with great scores. Now I have to wait to see if I am selected for oral boards (scored interview by a panel including the chief examiner) if I pass that I have to go through background checks and polygraph testing. Then they combine your scores from everything and make a list of the top however many and choose from that. Trust me it is quite the process and they say it will be another 4-6 weeks til they choose someone and it has already been almost 2 months! Crazy!

Anyways I am excited to have passed...hopefully I can pass the rest. Working for the county would pay almost 40% more plus all the great state benefits. Plus once you are in you are in yes.gif
