No dreadlocks, but I always wear a small braid in my hair and tuck a few feathers in it.

Do you go to salon to wash your hair ? or is there any special treatment for dreadlocks ?

I maintain my dreads myself - using hair products especially for dreadlocks (shampoo). I keep them neat and clean - they're not big or messy.

I have locks!!!

But despite the popular assumption in Jamaica, I am not a RastaGal. I as well, maintain them myself.

I don't have them, but I like how they look on others. My FIL (rasta) has verrrrry long dreads, I have not seen them yet but I am dying to.
I love to see the really long it amazes me. *sigh* maybe when I retire to Jamaica, I'll start mine.

I'm blonde and blue eyed but my locks go well with me - or so they say. They locked up pretty quickly too - I guess because I love them

I know it does depend on your job. I got mine while I was still in college. I've had no problem with work (I'm a teacher).

I had them in High School, up to college days, but once you get into the Job Market I had to take them off, you get discriminate as lot of ignorant people associate locks with Ganga, marijuana smoking and all.

i am a guidance counselor...here where I teach it is NOT a liberal type place...so visible tattooes, dreads, anything like that is frowned upon!!
I think they're cool though.

No dreads here. I do like to have a braid tucked in my hair in honour of my Cherokee heritage. No feather though.

That looks awesome~ What made you decide to do it? How do you start?

Apr 7 2007, 08:55 AM
I wanted a change...hahaha so I decided to get dreads - I know it sounds weird. I had wanted them for awhile but didn't know where to start. I was looking at my options in NYC but it was expensive and there are different ways to do it - some people use thread to help form them. This way you have to constantly go back to have them maintained.
I went to Peru to work for a summer and I met a Peruvian "hippie". He offered to do them for me. 11 hours (3 days) later I had what would mature into dreads. I did a lot of research on-line to know how to start and maintain them. It was harder in Peru, but as soon as I got back to the U.S. I bought dread shampoo - other shampoos leave residue and it makes the locks harder to dread up.
Now I've had them for 4 years - and it takes at least 1 year to mature. Mine matured pretty quickly and I get compliments on them a lot now

. However, I don't know how much longer I've had them. They are kind of growing out a bit themselves, my fiance doesn't like them much

, but mostly I think I'm ready for another change - I miss having straight hair a bit, and may change careers.
We'll see...good luck!

Thanks for posting this.... dread have always fascinated me but they'd never work for my age/lifestyle.
If you decide to take them out, how does one do that? Doesn't it damage the hair at all?

I sometimes wear braids. but, my hair is long. I was thinking yesterday about dreads.. but I wanted them really thin. so I can wear diffrent styles. I have this book with micro dreads and the styles look really professional. I favor the professional look.

Apr 7 2007, 10:14 AM
I favor the professional look as well - I'm a teacher and can only get away with so much. I wear my hair back the majority of the time.
In order to get rid of them I'd have to cut them - meaning I'd have short hair. My hair is growing out enough now that I could do that and have short hair....it just makes me nervous because I've never had that
short of hair.
I always knew, from the beginning that I'd have to cut them out when when I was ready. Having dreadlocks is not really a hairstyle, but a way of life (I'm not talking about drugs either). People see you differently and most often, in my case, it's a good thing.
Dreads take years to mature and when you decide you no longer want them, it's quite a change

.
I got them when I was 22 and in my senior year of college so it wasn't too big of a deal. However, I do see older (gray-haired women) with them and they look great!!

I used to, about 10 years ago- in highschool.

They looked quite similar to the pictures of yours, just in brown, about the same length, too.
I cut them after about 2 years when I was in Australia, it got too hot unter there

That was I think the strangest thing of all: to go from a "pillow" of hair to nearly no hair in one day. Mine was about 1/3rd of an inch long after cutting and on the first night I hit my head really hard on my headboard in bed, because I wasn't used to not having my "pillow" with me.

i have dreadlocks, been growing them for the pass three years. For those with locks have you ever have dreams were they are being cut. Does anyone know the meaning of this.

OMG wegotit!!
I have had those dreams - but only during the first year. It wasn't exactly that someone was cutting them - but rather that they were coming out. That scared me so much I was so relieved to wake up and feel they were still there....
Sorry, I don't know the meaning of that.
