What happens if I forget to change the name on something?

Did anyone find it easier to use both names with a hyphen?

I'm not getting married until the end of the month, so I haven't been through the process yet. However, I do plan on changing my last name (ridding myself of my current surname). I was told to call the Social Security office, change my last name there and then continue on from there.
