Hello,
Does anyone know whether it is possible to get a Social Security Number while you are waiting for your Employment Authorisation Document? I arrived on a K1 visa a few weeks ago and just got married and am putting together our AoS paperwork. I realise it will can take up to 3 months to get the EAD and i would obviously like to get a SSN far sooner so that i can open a bank account / get a driver's license etc.
My lawyer (who has been wrong about a lot of things) told me that this is not possible. The VJ guides, by contrast, claim that it can be done, although the form they refer to dates from 2003 so i wasn't sure if it was up to date.
Can anyone help me? Has anyone recently managed to get a SSN before their EAD was approved?

Im currently in the same position as you, trying to get the AOS stuff together, i'm finding it so overhwhelming. Do you know if we have to file another I-130 Petition for Relative? Sorry that I can't help with the Social security number question that's something i'm also needing to look into.

hey
you can get your ssn if you came in on a k-1 but it will just say that it's not valid for employment purposes. once you get your AOS approved you can go back and get a new card that doesn't say that.
check out this page:
http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssnget all the material together and take it to your social security office; you shouldn't have any trouble with it if you've been here a couple of weeks now.
be sure to check out the AOS forum if you have questions about your paperwork
best of luck!

K-1s are considered to be "Work Authorized" by SSA and they will issue a number before you get EAD card, most employers want to see both EAD and SSN before they hire a person.
You have 75 days from entry on the K-1 to apply for SSN.
Read the guide, it answers your question.

The card will say "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION." no need to revisit the SSA until after Green-Card. EAD card satisfies the Disclaimer, and SSA wont remove the restriction until green-card is in hand.

We followed the K1 process flowchart that tells you to file for SSC right after you arrive here. It took 7 weeks to get it. HE got a temporary work permit and We've filed for AOS EAD so hoping not to have much of a gap between work permits. Those Attorneys don't sound very good.

Andre COULD NOT get his social security card until he got his green card or EAD, whichever came first. We are in St. Louis, MO.
I read so many people on here stating you can get it immediately. Maybe it is just differnt states or something. We got married almost immediately, filed AOS and then filed for SSN. After that, a bank account and driver's permit were possible.

My Fiancee got her SSAN 2 weeks after application (we get married on 2 Apr) and it has the "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" on it. Does this mean she can work? I thought we still had to apply for the EAD or temporary work authorization? Ken

Thank you so much. Someone else said pretty much that same thing to me just the other day. I never really noticed. Just know it is one of my favorite pictures.
And, I have to say, you are making me laugh with the triple postings and cry for help. Thanks for that too.

Ken, If Maria got the work authorization stamp when she first entered the US on her K-1 visa, then she can work
until the time her I-94 expires. There have been discussions that anyone coming in on a K1 is authorized to work regardless if one has a stamp or not but without the stamp, one does not have any proof of work authorization to show any prospective employer.

Thanks, I asked aboutt he temp Work Authorization when we went through the Immigrations upon arrival and was told Hawaii does not do that. Kind of strange we have illegals crossing the borders working but when one enters the U.S. legally, we have to wait. Ken
