How am I going to cope when I move to America? HOW???

Err.... go to Target?

One can only hope Target will be stocking it by then! (Didn't have it in the Target I visited the other week...)

Or there's this method: http://www.target.com/gp/browse.html/ref=s...p;node=13827141

Ha HA! I'm already sitting on a substantial stash of Boots' Curling Creme in my basement! bwa ha ha... you won't catch ME short!

Sorry to bump, but meauxna, I investigated the Boots Curling Creme after I ran out of the ridiculously expensive Frederic Fekkai stuff I got for Christmas. Used it for the first time today and my god, you are right to sit on a stash of that stuff -- my hair looks like I went to the hairdresser's!!!

Thanks for the hot tip! good.gif

the hot sugar polish is nothing short of fanatastic, btw....I was so sad to leave a full one behind, lol. Now it doesn't need to be brought over, the heavy b@stard, hahahahha.

I haven't tried Boots yet but I found it at my local Target. Can anyone tell me which moisturizer and eye cream is best?

Woohoo! Are you a curly girl too? Wait til tomorrow--it will be even better if you just mist a little water on it!
(making my own lavender & rosemary spritz currently)

Dontcha feel like a total sucker too.. I mean *how* cheap was that stuff! If you still want to spend a lot of money when you get to the US, try Aveda.
hmm.. haven't been over to see what mumsie brought me back from Mark's this time.. I hear it might be underpants! w00t!
homesick_american
I got a hint of that when I noticed that Boots started putting both metric and imperial values on a lot of their products that they sell in the UK. Guess they can't be arsed to print two sets of labels. biggrin.gif

I am not a curly girl but a very wavy one. I spent 9 years fighting the wave because my SFB ex-husband liked my hair straightened, and like an idiot I did it every single day. Once I moved out, I made tentative steps towards setting free the waves, letting it be natural every couple of days but still blow-drying it straight most of the time (although I binned my GHD straighteners/hair fryers). Finally, I had enough in October of last year and stopped using my hairdryer, and formed a deep and meaningful relationship with curl creams/potions/etc. Now I can sleep longer, my hair looks healthy and sexy and I no longer shed tons and tons of hair. I can't honestly say I miss my hairdryer or my straightener one bit! no0pb.gif

I still have the hairdryer but only the hubby uses it -- I am hoping someday he'll learn to love HIS waves too!

I actually went in to Target yesterday ( my local one is an hour away) and found boots stuff! biggrin.gif

It's not cheap here either. Well, it sort of is when you compare it to Clarins or some premium brand, but it's not the cheapest stuff either.

I broke down and bought some new shampoo, telling my fiance I was working on making myself more British via osmosis. My hair smells Boots fresh now.

That sounds odd.

Yes it IS overly expensive for a drugstore brand, but I think if I bought it in the UK, it would probably work out to be the same right?

Oops, except Boots uk is having a 2 for 5 quid sale on the same kind of shampoo I just bought. So perhaps it was a bit more here. But if you consider that's 2 fo 10 bucks american, that would've been savings. Regular price is 2.99 GBP, so that's about the same as I paid American.

Small bottle and my hair isn't magically wonderful today, but what the hell, right?

I'd still be more excited over Superdrug since the name is cooler, as is the retro star logo.

OK, I googled, but what's SFB?

You might enjoy the site naturallycurly.com and/or the book Curly Girl--it's really useful for balancing all that product & effort with what nature is going to do anyway! I've ditched the dreaded 'cones and, believe it or not, all that expensive shampoo! In fact, we had a No Poo thread going here for awhile.. some new folk trying it out. I got into it when I was shopping around to have my hair straightened at a salon---so glad I didn't! smile.gif

Whenever my American friends visit, Lush is the first place they want to go...Boots is #2 on the list. I don't get it; it's just a drugstore. laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif I buy my shampoo at Sainsbury's...I get whatever's on sale. Right now I'm working my way through a giant bottle of Tresemme. Whatever I use on my hair it always comes out limp and flat, so I don't see the point of spending a tenner on a bottle of shampoo when my hair is still going to look like crap. huh.gif

One of things I missed most in the UK was American drugstores - no one understood why Boots wasn't a suitable replacement

I don't really miss Boots but I do miss No 7 foundation - it was perfect

So what is so great about US drug stores? In California, they're the cheapest place to buy beer, which is about the best thing i can say. Otherwise, its generally cheaper to buy what they sell in Target or even the supermarket.

Thrifty Ice Cream from Long's Drugs is good, but I just don't get US drug stores. Too much overpriced, and low quality crap in them for my liking. They kind of remind me of mini Wal-marts. I feel the same way about Superdrug in the UK really. Boots at least had products that were exclusive to their stores, and the shops are bright and clean.

This isn't an attack BTW, I genuinely don't understand the appeal, even after living in the USA for 8 years. Now I live in Pennsylvania, where they don't sell beer or Thrifty Ice cream in Drug Stores, I haven't set foot in one for 3 years and can't think why I would.

I STILL miss Ulta...damn, I'm looking forward to getting into that place. There and Sephora. Mmmmm.

And Pottery Barn.

And Bath & Body Works.

And Target.

And Old Navy.

And Best Buy.

etc.

Because in my local drugstore I can buy shampoo, a hammer, a birthday card, a magazine, a beach towel, beer, nail polish and pick up a prescription all in one trip in a store with only 5 aisles. THe one near where I grew up used to sell fine jewelry (not costume jewelry, diamonds with 5 carats) and had a fountain where you could get milkshakes. You don't really get this kind of place in the UK.

I don't dislike Boots -- they're products are okay, but there's nothing reallly I can't get here and I don't really miss them (except #7 foundation)

Hey, I work for Best Buy tongue.gif

Whilst I will admit there's a lot of stuff that they seem to be out of all the time and their buyers probably don't have a clue what their doing, its a pretty cool place to work for. I work in the Geek Squad(yes, I am actually a Geek too!)

Ok, sorry for hijacking the topic laughing.gif

I missed Target a bit in the UK but it didn't really arrive near where I lived until a few years before I left for the UK and then didn't get good until the late 90s. I always went on trips home though. I did have a really bad customer service experience last year and have been trying to avoid it since (not entirely successful)

I'm another one who doesn't miss it one bit. I guess if there is one elusive product there that you can't possibly live without is one thing, but on the other hand, we have access to some of the best products on the net, and at a fraction of the price compared to the UK.

I'm a bit of a product junkie, and related to a rather popular beauty editor (well, she is popular in the beauty editing world). She has given me access to a plethora of products from all over the world that I would never pay the price for. Most of them are worthless and she will agree, but it still puts lil ole Boots very much in the shade when it comes to value and quality.

I'm quite surprised by BBW. I avoided it for a while thinking it must be full of crap but visited one of their super sales they have twice a year. Some of their stuff is amazing, and at stupid cheap prices. I'm also a big fan of mineral make up companies. Really nice stuff without all the crappy chemicals. If only they could use that approach on the food here.

The only thing I miss is decent spray deodorant. I hate those sticks and gels. I stock up on every visit so I never run out.

I heard from that Dr Oz of 'You the Manual' that any skin creams that claim to be anti aging can only work if there's alpha hydroxy in it. Has your relative ever said anything like that?

OK wrinklies. Get your best reading specs on.

Basically, there are things in anti-aging moisturizers that do work: alpha hydroxy acid, retinol, peptides, and vit C. They work mainly by speeding up exfoliation which helps smooth your skin. If they don't have any of those ingredients in them they are a crock, and will only work temporarily by plumping the moisture in your skin.

She swears by any form of Retin-A which really does make you look younger. It takes around 2 months to really see a difference though. I tried Retin-A for 2 months and didn't see much of a difference, but I didn't have many wrinkles to start off with. Once they come, I'm deffo using it again though. blush.gif I really like the Vitamin C moisturizers. They just work for me and my skin right now.

She is a big advocate of facial massages either at a spa (yeh right we all have loads of spare cash for that each month!), or a self massage at home. The act of touching your skin in a curative way will keep it youthful...yes, it will! I would also add drink LOADS of water, and always make sure you have plenty of EFAs in your diet, either through good quality supplements like Udos, or a good balanced diet.

Oh, and give up the fags. They do nowt for your skin. headbonk.gif yes.gif

Certainly a rival to the BOOTS stuff as far as I am concerned......although a bit pricier in the US than the UK crying.gif

Ah thanks Lou. The moisturises that I DO use contain Retin-A, I don't smoke and I drink tons of water. Luckily I don't actually have many wrinkles (years of hating the sun has helped) but I feel prevention is better than cure.

One thing I have used in the past that worked REALLY well, was Frownies. These bits of paper that you stick on your skin overnight. Smooths out the wrinkles and teaches you to not use certain facial muscles. I was starting to get a slight crows foot around my eye and after using these for 6 weeks it had gone.
Lou Lou
I would go for a good diet as a prevention, Lisa...plus avoiding the sun like Mags says. It will just age your skin no matter what. A good high SPF every single day which I'm sure most people do anyway.

Good luck with the ciggies. I gave up 7 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. good.gif
