I understand that once the I-130 is approved and the visa arrives, the person has 6 months to enter the US. Is there any way to extend this time? FYI, this is coming through a DCF, and we have resided in the foreign country for over 20 years. It may not be possible to wrap up everything in 6 months! Thanks for your advice.

I tried extending my K1 visa but they said no way. Had to wrap up my affairs from the U.S. Not impossible but definitely a nuisance. Still is, actually. sad.gif Doesn't hurt to try, though. Maybe DCF is different.

You live in Canada, make a trip to the USA for a weekend or something, use the visa, they will stamp the passport with an I-551 stamp showing green-card ordered and making your passport a temporary green-card, then return to Canada to finish arranging your affairs.

Unfortunately that has tax implications for us. As soon as the VISA is activated, we are both US residents for tax purposes. We need to remain Canadian residents until our affairs are in order.
