Hello,

If any of you lucky souls innocent.gif have married a Thai girl you have already realized they are VERY nationalistic. So my wife keeps bugging me as to the fact that if she becomes an American Citizen will she still be a Thai Citizen? I've no idea... I tell her she will always be Thai or both but I really don't know! Anyone know?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but your fiancee will have a dual citizenship once she's married to you and became US Citizen.
kyle_lairic
As far as i know, she will become American Citizen. But she can apply for Dual Citizenship.

Some ‘‘sending’’ states (that is, states with high emigration) are actually encouraging the acquisition of other nationalities. Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Italy, India, the Philippines, and Thailand are among many recent additions to the list of those countries allowing birth citizens to retain nationality when they naturalize elsewhere

Dual nationality does exist for Thailand - I don't have information specific to Thailand, however in many countries it is not automatic, meaning it must be applied for before gaining US citizenship (Germany for example). Check the Thai embassy for details... good.gif

You will still be Thai. When you enter Thailand, and you have US passport they will issue you a PERMANENT STAY visa with no expiration. You will be able to travel to Thailand anytime.

Permanent stay meaning you can stay for as long as you want.

Out of sheer curiosity..does Permanent Stay have the same 'privileges' as Citizenship..?

Whether or not Thailand will allow you to reteian your citizenship if your naturalize is up to them...

Thialand is one of those countires that allows dual citizenship and requires a formal renunciation before Thai Authorities in order to lose one's citizenship..

Whether a person of Thai nationality who has married an alien and acquire nationality of his/her husband /wife lose his/her Thai nationality ?

The person is still a Thai nationality unless:- - He/She desires to renounce Thai nationality by declaring his/her intention to the competent authority. -His/Her Thai nationality is revoked by the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand.

There might be other considerations for your Thai wife to think on---real estate ownership comes to mind.

consolemaster,

All of the Thais I know who have become US citizen's use their Thai passport to enter Thailand.

David and Sumita,

Most of them are very nationalistic, but not all.

My wife is planning to apply for US citizenship the day she becomes eligible to submit the application. But she has no plans to give up her Thai citizenship or sell her Thai real estate. (And we're hoping that when the time comes her son will be able to get around the Thai military draft by not being literate in Thai, although he will be fluent.)

Hmmm.....You know what I found out about Thailand. If you have money, you cannot have it in your pants pocket.
Yodrak
consolemaster,

I think I know what you mean. But they just sent me to the ATM.

I'm a Thai and I can tell you that. As long as she didn't go to Thailand and tell the authority that she wants to give up her Thai citizenship, then she will be just fine. Dual Citizenship is the answer without any need to file any application. When she travel to Thailand; uses Thai passport, and when she comes back; use the U.S. passport... easy easy.. And she can't forget to renew her Thai ID, that's it.

If she has more questions, tell her to go to www.usvisa4thai.com
