I have a question...
Today my fiance and I went to the SS office and applied for an SSN for him. Everything went fine - the woman told us that he'll have it in 2 weeks.
However, a friend of mine (who is also married to a Brazilian guy) went to the same office - hours later - and they were told that they have to talk to immigration - and that he'll only receive his SSN in a month.
She told them that the system kept saying he needs a work permit before he gets his SSN. She told told them that every case is different. Is this true? Now she's worried because she is confused with the process and what to do.
Did this happen to anyone or did anyone hear about this?

The only difference I would say, if your friend's case in not on file with SSN office yet, he could just wait a few days then go back
It happened to us, Meredith. All we had to do was go back to the USCIS place and ask them to stamp the EAD thingy on my i-94 and then we went back to the ss office. That really delayed us, it took us 26 days to get our ss card on snail mail.
