Their "equipment" which makes the card is broken. Apparently that's why I still haven't got one yet. Isn't that the dumbest excuse you've ever heard?

I applied for it on February 27th and was waiting for my immigration status to be verified. Then they sent me a letter on March 8th, saying that my card should be mailed to me within 2 weeks. So it was 2 weeks today, no card yet, so I called. The guy was quite nice, but difficult to understand. He started to say something about 3-4 years (ha I thought for a second for my card), but then he said to apply for citizenship. Anyways, I tried to follow him, he just kept saying that I shouldn't have gotten my card yet and something about "broken equipment". Apparently I do have a number though, so I will have to go into the office tomorrow and they will give it to me.

We were told the same thing when we went to the local social security office on March 9th to check on the status of the name change that we applied for on Feb 20th. They said it would take approximately 4 more weeks to get it fixed and who knows how long to get through the backlog.

Ok, I have the card now finally. The mail had came later than usual today and it was there when my husband checked it when he came home.

I filed to change my ss to my married name and update my immigration status March 7th. I decided to call today just to check status-the lady, although extremely nice, claims they have not gotten around to verifying yet-so pretty much my file has been sitting at someone's desk for almost 3 weeks-so it never hurts to check and be pesty and proactive with this stuff-I think she was sort of embarrassed that it had not been done yet-sometimes they need a friendly reminder to do their job. apparently I will get a courtesy call next week and my file has been prioritized.

update on ss card. 3 days after I called to check the status on my ssn name change and DHS verification, I got a letter stating I should receive my card within 2 weeks. The date on the letter was the exact date I called to inquire. so, guys, once you give about 2 weeks, call to check up. In all of my experiences with ss, this has worked. it never hurts to be proactive instead of waiting around (just don't be rude when you call them!). I have heard that people who are getting ss numbers for the 1st time are having longer waits than those of us who already had a number.
