Experiencing homesickness after some of the excitement settles down is very typical when your wife or fiance(e) comes to the United States to start a new life together. My wife has been here about 32 days now and the symptoms of homesickness were very evident after about 2 weeks. Here are some suggestions that have really been of great help to her. Many of these reccomendations were suggested by members of the Manila Interview thread.

1. Be patient, kind and loving. Hold her, listen to her and assure her of your love for her.
2. Install TPC - The Filipino Channel - My wife loves it!
3. Take her to church
4. Keep her busy
5. Search for Filipino stores, dining, etc. we found a great place in Jacksonville called Rustys Grill. It is Filipino cuisine and Karaoke. Rosemarie loved going here.
6. Introduce her to Filipinos in the community. Many of them understand her homesickness, as they experienced just the same when they first came here to start a new life.
7. Encourage her to call her friends and family back in the Philippines. We have Tel3 communications. Tel3 is inexpensive and easy to use (about 14 cents a minute to Cagayan de Oro). You can enroll online and it is far more convenient than purchasing phone calling cards.

I hope this thread will continue on, as it can be of great help to others.

A thought I had- of coarse this is not possible for everyone. My fiancee is not here yet, but... Right now I am a student and I was planning on staying where I am, about 5 hours away from my family- mom, dad, brothers, sisters... I chose to move back home for a couple of reasons:

Instead of being a teacher, I am going to be a business major and work with my father helping him build family business. This was a practical choice for me because I want to make good money to have a financially stable life to offer my future wife. There is a greater benefit to this than I realized. My future wife is Filipina, she will be uprooted from her family- and not just the nuclear family like we are used to here in the states: but aunts, uncles, and cousins, too. So I thought it would be great that we would be around my family so my future wife can still be around that sort of thing. I know my family wont replace her's completely, but it will probably be a buffer for sure.

I just couldn't imagine getting her here and not having any of my friends or family near her while I'm off working and schooling: if it was me, I'd no sooner panic..
