Probably because most American tourists in the UK don't set foot outside the city.

*cough* thankfully *cough* wink.gif

Oh good. I knew I was special when my first real UK visit was to Cosham...

Cosham! What a wonderful place to visit. Where I'm from (Southsea) we call Cosham "The North". wink.gif

Haha Cosham, I lived in Horndean - not far! I remember many friday nights on southsea seafront, or if I really wanted to see a fight, guildhall walk...
TimsDaisy
Ha! The mothman! I got a photo of him. No really, they have a big statute. It's kinda creepy wink.gif

Parkersburg, cool smile.gif I had friends working there.

As for the who's-the-uglier-tourist debate: you'll always think your own countrymen (whether you're American, British, whatever) is the ugliest because you'll be overly-sensitive to being lumped in with someone misbehaving. "No, I'm not like them!" etc, etc. I think morons are the worst, regardless of their origin, and I've met morons of every race, creed, color, origin, etc, in every country I've been to.

Oh my yes british tourists are terrible....my mother made me cringe so much:

"...all I want is a proper cup of tea"

"do you have a pen? oh he doesn't understand D-O- Y-O-U- H-A-V-E-A-P-E-N? PEN?!?!" then makes circle shapes in the air

The last time my fiance was over, he wanted a cup of tea and was looking around my cabinets for my kettle. LOL That cracked me up. I boiled him some water, but I have since bought a kettle, because I don't believe he'd be satisfied without it. lol

When I first met my MIL to be she asked me if we had microwaves 'over there'

I am also often asked if we have the 4th of July there....I always say 'yeah, it's the day after the 3rd of July!'

Once, when I told a cashier I was from England, she said.... 'is that in London?'

But the best one I can remember was a cashier at a car dealership...after telling me that 'she lurved my accent' she told me that I 'spoke English very well' and then added the killer blow...she said 'I bet they make you learn English in school don't they!!!' wacko.gif Hubby and me had to make a quick exit before bursting with laughter.

ajames79
in regards to bad tourists...I try really hard not to complain to much because in the end it takes all kinds of people to make the world as diverse as it is.

Also in touristy towns they are what pays a lot of peoples salaries. I am really quite bored of the general labeling of cultures as lazy, fat, rude, stupid, arrogent etc etc etc. But that is just me.

I have been traveling back and forth to England since I was 13. Not to mention various parts of Europe and I've encountered lovely people all over. I also travel a lot in the states and I am always excited to meet tourists from other countries!

Anyway..enough of my rant. I am not stirring the ######. Just giving my view.

Yes, American tourists can be ugly. So can Brits or anyone else for that matter.

I'm sick to death of everyone thinking Yanks are so incredibly horrible people. I'm met some horribly ignorant Brits while living in London too. Especially in regards to American geography so how about cutting the Yanks some slack - at least they ask - Brits just keep their ignorance/opinions quiet.

I agree with Robinklake, these kinds of threads are crap. Every country has ignorant people.

Erm no...what seems to be upsetting everyone is that the thread has changed direction to a "who is the worst tourist" kind of thing. Beforehand it was a lighthearted look at silly questions you have been asked about the UK. Just my POV, of course. wink.gif

That's your interpretation, which you are entitled to. The fact that the thread was started by an American has no bearing? Come on people, lighten up.

Just for the record -

Anything I said was a joke, I love to travel and can be a terrible tourist - We all can be, I'm just having a laugh about the things we do!

No offense meant to ANYONE.

I was just using that as an example of how some people could interpret this thread as offensive.

Personally I think anyone offended by anything posted in this thread is overly sensitive and definitely should lighten up, especially those offended by anything I may have posted about "ugly American tourists" as I did state over and over again that I thought British tourists were far worse.

This one is tame. I get the total blood pressure over at britishexpats when they start these threads. 'Cause I think of all the stupid things I have heard/read Brits say about the US.

We're all equally dumb. And I know why these threads bother people. Even when started by an American.

I do not get upset by internet message board and thusly am not bothered or offended. It's just a point I enjoy bringing up.

Anyways, the question of "do you know such and such" in a town of 10 million is not so silly when my father (who is never afraid to look stupid) asked someone such a question and not only did this person know the person in question but put him back in touch after losing contact after 20 years. So it is a small world.

I think you agree because you lived and worked there and I'm sure you KNOW what I'm talking about.

My personal favorite is being told by how stupid Americans are by someone how the previous week thought Mexico was part of the USA and would regularly have problems finding countries like France and Germany on the map. My eyes have rolled so much I'm sometimes I'm surprised they are still in my head.

I honestly don't feel like it was a dig at americans, well not in MY opinion. I love americans (obviously wink.gif ) and on the whole are alot more friendly and easier to get along with than brits.
However, sometimes the questions you get asked can be funny. Especially when like me you live in a VERY remote area where people don't travel much.

AND, my family have asked some pretty stupid albeit funny questions to my husband too, and thats just as good!

I get that but when you hear over & over again - usually in threads started by Brits, how stupid Yanks are, it gets really, really old.

Let's start a 'What are some really stupid things you got asked about the US while living in England?' Cuz I got PLENTY, let me tell you.

This thread was perfectly lighthearted and quite amusing until you came into it and started bitching about it. If you came in and started quoting funny/stupid things Brits have said to you about the USA, we would have had a good old laugh. If theres one thing us Brits can do its laugh at ourselves without getting all touchy about it.

Why do you care so much? I'm not exactly sure you aren't a bit touchy yourself. And you have totally misread the level of anger or the lack of humor I might be experiencing.

I don't care about the thread - FFS Lisa started it! She's American! I know it was meant as a light thing and thus said so! I also stated an opinion and in fact, DID mention stupid things (not getting "proper" tea, stag parties around Europe, thinking Mexico is part of the US). I guess that's a breach of dr_lha code of netiquette. Quite frankly I find your response to that more annoying than the thread.

I have now left Tokyo and am now in Hong Kong -- I shall now go out to Wan Chai to observe the British male being idiot (and there will be a lot of them since the Rugby 7s are next week) and report back so you can laugh at your fellow countrymen.
