Oh how I hope we can make this happen!!! Two weeks in England this year, which shouldn't be too much of a stretch for us, but we are planning a very expensive trip to Rome in April of next year that has me concerned, so we have to watch the money.

So - this trip to England has to be a way cheap-o trip!! The first week will not be a problem, we will be staying with his parents in Scotland (Isle of Lewis) for a few days, then with his granddad near Pontefract, and some friends in Sheffield. So the first week we should not have to worry about lodging or what to do or where to go.

The second week I'm open to suggestions on good cheap places to stay and things to do. I don't have to do all the typical touristy stuff, in fact I really prefer not to. Ideas of what you might do on your own weekend home would be great!

September will be here before we know it!! I've been dying to get back there for two years now!!

I love sheffield - really friendly city. make sure your friends take you in to the peak district as it boarders sheffield (Castleton-a beautiful town with lots to do)

London (Obviously) all the sights - london eye, tower bridge, tower of london, houses of parliament/big ben, westminster abbey, st paulscathedral, buckingham palace and the changing of the guard etc etc. Soooo much to do.

A good day trip from london is to stone henge. A must see if you are going to england.

I could go on as there lots of great places to see but as you only have a week its best to get the main stuff out of the way. If yo like art or history then the british museum and the tate modern are worth a trip too.

On my own weekends in england i would find a pub by a river and sit out and drink all day. Lots of fun, if the weather is nice.

I do love Sheffield - I'm looking forward to going back there. The tram system is fantastic! We spent a night at a B&B in Castleton last time I was there, it was one of my favorite places. I would so love to go back there, but there are so many other places to see!!

I know we will spend a bit of time in London, but not too much, we are more countryside people and not big city people. I would love to see the Tower though - that would be cool.

I know one place I have to go back to is Whitby - we have some fantastic memories from our visit there, and nowhere on the planet has better fish and chips!!!

I totally love the idea of a pub by a river!! That sounds amazing right about now!

Yep - praying for good weather. Even just ok weather would be good as long as we don't have that sideways and upside down rain!!!

Avebury Stone Circle is WAY better than Stonehenge. You can actually touch and walk amongst the stones. In fact, Wiltshire is beautiful full stop. Find a nice little B&B, have a few nice walks, see a few historic sights. Have some nice pub lunches, generally see England at it's best.

My favorite part of the entire land is Devon and Cornwall - there aren't really many historic sights to see (well, I haven't been to them) to see there but it is very beautiful and pleasant.


Also -- Scotland. Glasgow is one of my favorite cities on earth and Edinburgh is very lovely too.

Try the Yorkshire Dales

Edinburgh is lovely. I haven't spent much time there, but whilst growing up my main family holidays were spent in the Scottish Highlands, about 50 miles north of Fort William. Wonderful, gorgeous memories.

We're going over in May for 2 weeks, and spending our second week in Dorset at a friends cottage. From there, we're going down to Devon and Cornwall and up into Somerset.

In my opinion, these 4 counties are the prettiest in the country. So much to see and do, I think I'm looking forward to it more than hubby!

Oh, you beat me to York. I have been dieing to get back! I like Whitby, but been there WAY too many times. Their fish is amazing though. Maybe do a trip along the coast ie scarborough etc. Lots of nice little villages around York though. I love Knaresborough, so cute, boats on the river, pitch and putt and this amazin little ice cream shop... Fish and ice cream, I'm SO hungry now hehe!

Also fun - reservations for some champagne cocktails at Tower 47 - (the building formerly known as the NatWest tower in London).

Ooh - and I've been to a yummy tapas place in Sheffield - I'll have to dig up the name.

And Rome - oh Rome! You lucky ducks!

Not to be too predictably American, but if you haven't yet bought or borrowed the Rick Steves' Italy book - go get it! (There's a Rome focused book too, I think). Useful. And if you want Rome restaurant and tour ideas, PM me - I love love LOVE Rome!

Sooooo many ideas!!! Oh - it just makes me want to go tomorrow!!

The first words out of my mouth this morning whe we woke up "Is it very cold in England in September?" I don't even thing I said good-morning!! hehehe

I love the idea of doing the coastal thing, starting with Whitby and seeing some other sights from there. And the Lake District just looks so yummy to see! Way too much to choose from - we are going to have to sit down and map this all out. And all the B&B and hotel suggestions from everyone on the "where to stay in London" thread are very helpful too.

Oh - the Rome trip!!! Still over a year off, but that one will have me drooling the entire time of waiting. We are fortunate enough to be going with a very good friend of ours who had been to Rome many times, as well as a priest who will be guiding our tour and will be making arrangements for us to have private mass in the convent chapel at St. Peter's and some other cool stuff. I just absolutely can't wait!! It's going to be an expensive trip, but hey, if babies come along we won't be traveling much, so I'd like to get the traveling done while we can!

Oh and as far as what to do in the UK...I'm partial to the North...I'd reccommend Sea Houses for the best fish of your life....Lindisfarne, Durham, etc

York is a fantastic place to visit. Lots to see in a small area.

My favourite place to go is Wales and Anglesey. Lots of castles and neolithic burial sites and stuff all over the place. We've been to Conway Castle 3 times. Lots of them are free to visit too.

I don't live far from the Peak District either, the scenery is ace. The Blue John mine is interesting to visit and there's Peveril Castle and Chatsworth Hall too.

Calling my soon-to-be MIL tomorrow. They LOVE to do the coast trip so want me to ask for more good places to stop? I swear every weekend we see them they drive up and down all the little towns

Oh yes!! If I'm not too late to ask! I'd love to know their favorite places to visit!
