I am feeling a little homesick at the moment, its just part of the adjustment I guess.

I LOVE it here and I am happy, but I found my self missing things from home I NEVER would of thought I would.
Like pub quiz's for example.

Or fish and chips...I HATE fish, I don't want to eat it, I just want to see it being sold!

I also, rather embarrassingly miss Neighbours also! blush.gif laughing.gif

What do you miss that you never thought you would from back home?
Lou Lou
I went through all manner of things that I missed over the past few years. I think the main one for me is the weather. I love grey gloomy days, I love days when you stay in cos it's pissing down, I love the wind, I love the spring air. I just don't get that here. Don't laugh. laughing.gif
flutter95
Well thats funny cause I miss the weather too...

I know wtf ? blink.gif

But seriously, I always wanted tons of snow. Pfft now I know how annoying and COLD it is, and jsut grr.

Gimme rain, cloud and 5c anyday! laughing.gif
Lou Lou
Yeh, this is my 3rd full winter and I don't like it anymore. The first was a novelty and I'd always be out in it...the second was OK for the first 3 months, but then I got tired of it...the third I was ready for it to be over by 1st December. I don't know what I expected cos it's a ski resort area so it's gonna be nothing but snow for 5 months, right? wacko.gif

The longing for food items does diminish, and when you go home to stash up on your favourites you realise they maybe weren't quite so good for you after all.

I do miss the British sense of humour too. A lot. There is a large dose of irony deficiency over here. ph34r.gif

I miss pavements too - isnt that weird?! The weather here is far more extreme than London so I do miss temperate grey days where it wasnt warm or cold. I missed chocolate for a while but then found that certain stores in the DC metro area sold them anyway so all was fine. I really really miss a good curry, and bread. Bread here is just pitiful - I miss going to Greggs on a Saturday morning and buying warm bread and a cheese and onion pastie. I have been looking for a sofa lately and I have to say I have been longing for the likes of DFS and John Lewis. I miss family and friends of course and just popping over to see them when I was bored or wanted a good chat. That said, my husband is my life so Im happiest wherever he is !!
Widge
I too miss the weather or more specifically four seasons of equal length with no extremes of heat or cold - seems like here in Ohio we get 5 months of summer (often too hot) 5 months of winter (often too cold) and blips on the weather map inbetween. I get fed up with people going on about oooh but it rains all the time in England, it doesnt annual rainfall here is double my UK home town wacko.gif

English humour irony and subtlety ........

On the food score I think eventually you can find most things you hanker for here if you scour the shelves long enough (this was my haul at the weekend in the back end of Ohio so there must be hope for all)

The only thing that Claudeth seems to miss is the Filipino food at the malls, she sure loves to go to the malls! tongue.gif

I miss neighbours too smile.gif and i havent even left the UK yet ..LOL
I will also miss emmerdale, eastenders and corenation street, im 38 yaers old, how sad is that smile.gif
Anyway im looking foward to the new experiance's, going to live in Orlando, Florida....
so there is a lot of english people to chat to if i miss that, also english pubs, football and stores that sell english food, so this is the last time you'll here me moan smile.gif
LVA
I miss the English sense of humour!!! laughing.gif
flutter95
I miss pasties too.

REALLY bad for you but mmm, so good.

I found it funny how we all HATE the rain and waether when we're in it, but when we are faced with harsh, severe weather we welcome back the gloom and rain with open arms! laughing.gif

I miss the humour too.
TimsDaisy
I'm the USC, but there's stuff I miss too: easy, cheap access to penguins and good curry for one. countdown in the afternoon (i'm SUCH an exciting person), though I liked the old Des better, i think.

also - better motion sensors on UK self-flushing toilets - which may be the dumbest thing to miss, but they're just plain better.

And bartenders who universally know what a "shandy" is without a 5 minute instruction and rationalization.

And Tesco.
Happy Bunny
I can't believe I'm going to say it, but I miss the stupid pub quiz!

Damn you mags! tongue.gif

From your description of how much you liked the pub quiz previously (rather have your fingernails pulled off one by one or summin like that....) are you sure you're not just missing David or your UK life rather than the quiz itself??? laughing.gif

laughing.gif We have one here in town and literally nobody knows how to use it. Cars stop in the middle to let others on...and one truck went around the middle of it, instead of on the road. rolleyes.gif Don't get me started on the lack of signaling and talking on their phones. headbonk.gif The driving test is way too easy. I didn't even have to get in reverse gear for mine. helpsmilie.gif

lol, we have one nearby and my husband always moans about how no one knows what they're doing there.

He couldn't believe how lame the driving test was either and he's always yelling about how someone didn't 'indicate' lol.
flutter95
lol, roundabouts!

When my in-laws came to England, we traveled all over. Well my father in-law drove and everytime we came across one (like once a mile laughing.gif ) he screamed the entire time he was on it! So funny. laughing.gif

I miss listening to my iPod on the tube....
ajames79
Mags...your cat photos KILL me! laughing.gif

I miss...and I am not even British drinking a pint with dinner. At a pub.

ya! And by dinner I mean lunch.

I get messed up when I come back...calling lunch dinner and dinner tea and ya...that.

Let me also very very quietly say that roundabouts and narrow roads are the reason I don't drive in England...But shhhhhh don't tell anyone.
cheeky^Wolf
I miss normal sized newspapers. Broadsheets are just so hard to read when you have short arms.

I have to agree on roundabouts. Much prefer them to 3 or 4 way stop signs.

That's all I can think of! So if I stay off the roads and don't read newspapers, I'm ok!!
flutter95
I HATE stop signs here.

sometimes its SO retarded.

Random stop sign in the middle of no where but you have to stop to the count of 2?! laughing.gif

I do think it's silly to have some stop signs in the middle of nowhere.

And I'mma disagree with the group re:roundabouts (even tho I'm not the UKC).....in pretty much the whole time I lived there, roudabouts scared the shiznit outta me.

I much prefer stop lights and stop signs...but meh, i suppose it's all what you're used to!
Widge

I have this theory that STOP signs are manufactured by the same folk that do the clutches and brakes here as having one leads to the faster disintegration of the other !! I miss roundabouts which sooooo keep traffic moving but cannot believe that the majority of american drivers who appear to have no concept of an indicator could ever master them whistling.gif

You've got to be kidding me. The roundabout is the most idiotic traffic control device that exists today.

Four-way stop signs are GREAT (unless you don't know how to use them.)

We live in a town where the average age is 60! When you're lucky enough that they can SEE the stop sign, they either sit there for half hour or slow down for it and if you don't go within 1 second, they do. It's scary!!

I miss quiz machines.

Ooooh.... I will miss quiz machines, when I get there, no doubt about it... I love those things. I've barely been near a pub all year (saving money), so when The Boy was over last week, and we visited lots of, erm, traditional english hostelries, I excitedly dragged him to have a go on every quiz machine I could find. Sadly he was totally bemused by all the UK-centric questions and got bored very quickly... much like I do when he makes me play the rubbish ones (that you can't even win any money on!) in the US. laughing.gif

He did love the pub quiz we accidentally ended up taking part in, though. Pub quizzes are fantastic things. Damn it, he needs to move here for the rest of the time before I leave so we can enjoy all this stuff (um, pubs) together!

I'm the USC, but I lived in London for a while with my fiance, and here's what I miss:

The shopping, especially of the cheap variety!
British comedy television
The Crystal Maze
Working near Oxford Street, crazy as it was
The tube
Exploring London
20 different music video channels that actually play videos
Well, just Sky itself
The accents
Good curry
The greenery and all the parks
The historicness
The diversity
Gourmet Burger Kitchen
Crap seaside towns
TEA!! Cream tea, mmm.
Proper muesli.

There are plenty more, but that's enough for now. :-P

I miss the quiz machines too...never thought about that. Me and D could play them for ages...they're so much fun!

I miss the FRUIT MACHINES even more, but I always knew I'd miss those so I guess that's for another thread. Can't tell ya how many times I've dropped the £100 jackpot at our local. Easily 20 times. biggrin.gif D wound up buyin me a Pirate themed fruit machine for our house...but it wasn't the same. Although the novelty was, when ya got on the board, I coulda swore the voice said 'way aye' instead of 'aye aye'

Aww... it's a while since I've done that (never lived in Richmond but lived in Twickenham a few years ago), but Pimms by the river in Richmond is one of the best ways to spend a summer evening. Or a whole summer day, in fact - that place has been the source of a lot of dehydration and sunburn on very hot days... wishing I'd spent some time there last summer, now!
