I can't stop crying, what am going to do?

I have the wallet size Birth Certificate. I have the "Registers of Civil Status" from my municipality - which has an offical seal and was used in the past to get a Passport, it is both French and English, and has both my parents name on it.
I am also in the process of hunting down my batismal certificate.

We had a fire when I was a kid, and some of our documents were destroyed.

My mother does not know what a long birth certificate is, hence my ignorance about the "long version" that needs to be translated etc.....

My apt. is TUES and I will never have the long version in time, nor will it have it translated.

What am I going to do?

Take the Register of Civil Status plus your Baptismal certificate with you. to the interview. They 'may' accept that in lieu of the birth certificate and if they do, then you should be fine. If they do not, then they will probably advise you to send in or deliver the birth certificate when you get it and either bring your passport with it - or leave your passport until you submit it, then return it to you with your visa and your passport. Then, if they need it, send in an application for a long form birth certificate and apply for the English version - if the Register of Civil Status is in English you may well be able to qualify for the birth certificate in English and not need to have it translated. But don't send it in before your interview as I believe you will need to send your Register of Civil Status to get your birth certificate. The importance of the long form birth certificate is that it includes both of your parents' names which are also on the Register. For a long time Quebec did not issue birth certificates - I was born in 1955 but did not get a birth certificate until the mid-80s. I just used my Baptismal Certificate and birth registration for my passports as well. At the best, they will accept what you have; at the very worst, you will only have a few more weeks delay - Quebec is very good at providing birth certificates in a timely way. Good luck at the interview - and remember, they may accept what you do have available.

My baptismal record does NOT have a seal. What the hell am I going to do?

I just sent away to Quebec for a few more Birth Certificates. I checked off that I wanted them in English. It took about 3-4 weeks to get them in the mail. I do believe there is an option to get it faster for a little more money. They give you an option if you want the wallet size or large one. Get the large one.

Right now, I think they are very busy- people are having to get the new Quebec Birth Certificates before they can get a Passport. I had to do that a few years ago when I got my new Passport. The old wallet ones were laminated and they no longer accept them.

As far as the Baptismal Record, I don't really know much about that.

For the record my long form of birth certificate does NOT have a seal.. My Province (PE) doesn't give them with seals on them anymore. Montreal took that no problems. So the "it must bear a seal" thing on the checklist at least for Birth Certif. can't be that stricktly enforced.. Hope that gives you some encouragement.. I'm with Katheryn41 on this one (she is pretty smart I've learned).

I just don't know if its in English or French. I pray it is in English but I doubt it. Could they delay my visa until it is translated?

Call the translators again and see if they will do a last minute translation for you. Actually tell them you want something translated after 4 p.m.

At 4 p.m., pick up the certificate, if it's in French, go to the translators. If it's in English call them back and tell them not to worry about the translation.

What good news After all this your interview tomorrow should be a breeze

So, I got the long version of my birth certificate. Its in FRENCH!

I also had my wallet sized certiciate translated and notirized. I also have my baptism certificate which is bilingual. I hope to goodness this works out. What do you guys think?

Do the instructions from Montreal say that the translation has to be notarized?

Says it has to be a certified translation I think.

I would get it translated along with the translator's credentials because I know you can't be an "official" translator in Canada without some sort of credential.

Okay, good there is definitely a difference between notarized and certified.

Kristen - go get it translated if you still can, and have the translator do something like this on it:

Afraid not, I do not have it translated.

I will send it to her, but she can't get it certified by the order and notarized (which she will have to present the oringinal birth certificate at that time) because my interview is tomorrow AM.

It will never be ready in time.

My understanding is that ANYONE who is bilingual can traslate, as long as they attach a statement like the one I posted above. I'm not sure if Montreal will accept it for sure, but I don't see how it can hurt.

I can understand if you are exhausted by all this, but if you want to try it's an option.

I just got off the phone with a translater (certified). He will translate the doc ($40) tonight. BUT, it will not be notarized.

What do you think will happen? I'm definately tired. What till I tell you what I did today to get all this done - I still can't believe that I was able to get the Civil Status Director to produce my Birth Certificate in less than 1 DAY!!!!!!!!!!

It would have been too perfect if it was already in English!

Look at your packet - does it actually say it needs to be notarized???

I don't suppose you have any friends that are notaries? One of my friends is a lawyer and he's a notary... do you have any lawyer friends?

It does sound like the both the translator and the notary have to meet. That sucks.

Barring you happening to know a notary, it might just work if you take one that's not notarized... I don't know if they even look at things that closely. I personally would try to take the translation anyway.

I would still get it translated and have the translator note their credentials, etc. on it. It's worth a shot. It's also worth a shot to run into your bank first thing in the morning (if you have time) and get them to notarise it. Even though it says it has to be sworn in front of a notary... maybe the notary at your bank will still give it his/her seal of approval.

You mean, banks still open in the morning? People in a bank still exists? WOW! That would be a first for me - whenever I go, its never open! honestly.

My interview is a 9AM. What time do you think will be latest that I can arrive?

If I go to the bank, assuming its open, doesn't that translator have to be present? In Quebec, a notary is different than in other provinces.

My husband's birth cert was translated from Portuguese into English. The translator attached a letter stating her credentials. It was not notarized and we were not questioned about it. You may be fne. Good luck!

You'll never guess what happened. He made a mistake!!!!!!!!! I only noticed after I drove home, took off my jacket, started organizing my file, and had a cup of camomile tea!

I had to go back to his house and pick-up the corected version. I just got back.
