We use the arabic words for Aunt and Uncle.

My in-laws asked me to call them Mama Na (for Naomi) and Daddy Curt (for Curtis). My parents have asked to be called by their first names, but my husband always says Mr or Mrs and then their first names.

So far, we both have attempted to avoid addressing each other's family (her parents and my Dad; my Mom is deceased) by any sort of name, since neither of us are sure what to call them.

My fiancee has said that her parents are very relaxed and that it'd be "okay" to call them by their first names, but I'd prefer hearing that from them before I did that. Right now, if I do call them by name, I'd use "Mr" or "Mrs" (followed by their surname) until such time they said it'd be fine for me to use their first names (or merely use "Mom and Dad" instead).

My Dad, however, is nowhere near as easy going as her parents. I spoke to him about this very topic a few days ago and said it'd okay if my fiancee addressed him as "Mr" or "Dr" (followed by his surname) until we're married. After that happens, then she could call him "Dad" if she wanted to or continue using "Mr" or "Dr" as well. However, he gave no indication that using his first name would be allowable at all. My Dad said that this is just showing "proper respect to someone who is senior to you."

Personally, I think he's a bit full of himself, but that's how he is. He won't ever change, so there's no point in trying to do anything about it. It's a shame too, since I can't help but feel that his attitude will make my fiancee somewhat uncomfortable. It's one thing to choose to say "Mr" (or "Dr" since he is a physician), but to be told that you have to use that and may not use someone's first name, as if you're a 10 year-old child, coming over to "play" is a bit insulting, given that she's my fiancee and future wife.

LOL!! laughing.gif

My SO calls my parents by their first names. The first time I spoke to my MIL on the phone I asked her what she'd like me to call her. She said that Mrs X was for strangers, and her first name was for friends, and seeing as I was going to be family I could call her anything else! Meanwhile my FIL self-nicknamed himself and from that I have special nicknames for both FIL and MIL. They are just fantastic people. I love them to bits and we're really close.

First names here also...

Chris did call my Mum up one day and said 'Hey Mom!' (As a joke) She went nuts laughing.gif She told him that he was FAR too old to be her son laughing.gif

I'm not sure about Chris's Mom actually... I haven't met her yet as she lives in Florida, we have emailed a few times and I always call her my her first name.. Not sure what it will end up being though. I don't think I would feel right calling her Mom? But I suppose you never can tell.

I addressed my father-in-law as Sir. I call my step-father-in-law by his nickname.
