My fiance is about to send off his checklist, but we're not sure about the Affidavit of support. He's under the impression that he has enough money to show that he will be able to support himself over here before he gets a job and therfore won't need me to fill out the I-134. Does anyone know how much money/assets he needs to have? I'm not sure I'm wording this question right...I hope I am making sense to someone...

Thanks!
~Chad~
This may help you out, if you haven't read it yet.

What information did he turn up when he got this impression?
mmb
The information I recieved in packet 3 implied that my assets could be counted as well as my fiances.
I took along a letter from my bank showing average balance over the last year and a current 5 figure balance.
This was taken from me as well as the affadavit of support.
I don't know what would have happened if I had tried to simply self sponsor but I do remember someone on here doing that successfully.

He got it from his packet 3 info. But it doesn't tell him how much money is sufficient. With the exchange rate, he will have over 6 figures in assets...I just don't know if that's sufficient to 'them'. It is for us!

You mean, he thinks if he has sufficient income/assets that you won't NEED to file an I-134? Not sure I've ever heard of that, but then I haven't been so fortunate to have so much in assets either.

Based on what I have seen on the London Embassy website which I am guessing is similar to Package 3 info (please may our Packet 3 arrive next week):

http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_new/visa/iv/faffidavit.html

They seem to allow "applicants own funds" to be used for support. I would guess they would want similar levels of assets as is required for I-864. My husband (UK) plans to provide information from his bank since he has already sold his house (at inflated English prices). But I am also providing an I-134. Rather have too much than too little.

KarenCee,

The K visas are non-immigrant visas. Any non-immigrant visa applicant needs to show that they have sufficient funds to support themselves while they are in the USA. If they do not, then they can find someone else to sponsor them and provide the necessary funding.

Typically, UKCs contact the Consulate and ask 'how much is enough?', or say 'I have this much, is it enough?'. The amount that others have used has varied.. every report I've read has indicated less than 5K GBP.

If you are going to claim the use of any asset, be sure it is documented throroughly.

For other readers, London is the only Consulate that regularly allows the K-1 to "self sponsor" (not to say you could not try it on elsewhere).
