Was your SO able to call you after they passed through immigration to let you know all was well or did you have to wait until you saw them come off of the plane to know for sure?

He can call from a payphone in the terminal.

He could call you from a pay phone Maggie, after he goes through immigration at JFK (I assume he's comming that way) he will go out to the regular terminal to catch his next flight....he can call from the pay phone there. Happy Reunion!

I had given Hicham a calling card number and pin I used a lot (and recharged frequently) so he could call me during his layover. So...yes...it is possible.

My husband couldn't figure out the paypone so he asked one of the airline workers if he could use their cell phone. They gave it to him and told him to use it as long as he needed it. wasn't that nice!

As you've already read, yes he can call - Said didn't have time cuz they were holding the plane for him - he barely made his flight! Our plan (knowing it was gonna be close) was that he would call if he *didn't* make his flight. When I didn't hear from him by a certain I had to get my azz in the shower & hurry....

Answer correct--also applies to Canuck airport PFI's; slightly more difficult, but not impossible from Dublin or Shannon PFI's.

It is forbidden to call from anywhere in the "secured" areas ... if there is a problem, they will call you into the office, where they have those glass windows with the phones to talk to the INS officer.
Once the SO is out and cleared they can call from a payphone, since most mobile phones donnot work (and if they do, roaming) in the terminals. If the SO does go outside of the terminal to the curbside parking area, generally works (but beware sometimes mobile fon batteries get the power sucked out of them while flying)....
