Jenn!
I have an off-topic question, but thought it best to post it in here where there's lots of knowledge about Vietnam.

I have a friend who is moving to HCMC for an international teaching position and her husband will be looking for work in the engineering field. His background is in civil engineering. I would really appreciate any advice you might have for him in his search for work.

Thanks so much in advance for your input!

Hi Jenn,

The jobs in SE Asia are much sought after. The job searching experiences I am familiar with are in Thailand.
Mostly people work as English teachers, but there are jobs at the odd publication and also on the oil rigs. But there are workers from around the world competing for the oil jobs and he's be away for long periods most likely. VN may be like Thailand and virtually everywhere else in not allowing foreigners to take jobs from its citizens.

Wish I had better help.

While not in engineering, I am a US Citizen and worked in HCMC for a private Vietnamese company for nearly two years. I worked on a business visa, rented a home, etc.

Sorry I can't be of help regarding engineering, but the possibility is there.

That's great info. Did you have a unique/in demand skill?

The general director of Vietnamworks.com, Chris Harvey, is an American expatriate. He maintains a blog of his experiences in Vietnam, and contacting him through his blog (link below) may be a way of networking into some available engineering opportunities that he or his company are aware of.

Ding,
I worked in marketing management during my time in Vietnam.
