Hey there all New Hampshire people:

I need advice on getting a driver's license. I have searched the DOT website and can't seem to find anything about K-1's getting licenses (maybe I am just blind and it really is there smile.gif

I called down to Concord yesterday and spoke to someone at the DMV. She said that K-1's are NOT eligible to get a license; must have a green card. Also, that we need to get my fiance's driving record from his home country.

I would love if someone could tell me that I just spoke to someone who is clueless and gave me wrong information ... it would be lovely to get his license without having to wait for a green card. I am resigning myself to the fact we may be waiting a bit though sad.gif

I just read over the NH DMV site and it doesn't say that K-1s are ineligible - it just seems to completely ignore the fact that people have K visas. It seems they only recognize I-94s for refugees who are there permanently, or I-94s for people who are working, going to school or living there temporarily for similar purposes. You 'could' try arguing that the I-94 is with a non-immigrant visa and he isnt here permanently until he actually applies for AOS when the status will still be legal but in a grey zone. If they bought it, I suspect the license would only be valid for the length of the I-94 but it might lessen the time he can't drive before he receives the EAD. EADs do seem to be acceptable for those there as workers so they should be able to allow him to get a DL with his EAD. Sure isn't a very helpful or friendly site, is it? It doesn't even tell you how long he can drive on his Canadian license and they want a heck of a lot of other evidence before they do grant a license. Good luck. Maybe you can try contacting the actual office of Non-Citizen Applicants - they may need to do some policy revisiting with 'new' information about K visas.

its unfortunately the same in Massachusetts. I didnthave to get a new driving license because I could just convert my german one. but for that I needed my ead as well. He explained it to me, that we dont really have a status here untile we have an ead or greencard and thatswhy they cant issue a driving license.
For my convertion I needed a driving record from germany as well.

I hope you get your ead or greencard soon so that you can drive.....Are you allowed to drive on your old passport for a while in NH???
In MA I can drive 1 year after entering the us with my german license. Maybe you can find something like that.
