Hi,

Can anyone tell me if I need to get my passport renewed for the visa interview. I understand that they have to stamp it if approved. I also wanted to know where I can apply for a renewal of my UK passport. Thanks in advance for any information.

I would presume that a valid passport would be needed. They dont have to stamp the passport and in most cases do not stamp at the interview nowadays but I doubt they would stamp an expired passport.
you can apply for a passport renewal from the British consulate.

If it was me and I had a few weeks to get a new one.... I would get it sooner rather than later. you can then take both the new and the old passport to your interview with you.

You don't need a passport for your AOS interview (but you should get it renewed through your consulate as soon as you can). You normally do need valid identification to get into the building, so you should take your expired passport along with other ID.

You do need your passport for your AOS interview as you are required to bring all documents showing your legal entry.

Yes, you do need a valid passport. However, I forgot to bring mine, and the IO forgave me smile.gif

Couple next to us at our interview were sent away with a RFE for her passport as she had let it expire and did not bring it to the interview....

I have a friend whose passport expired before their AOS interview. It wasn't an issue, but they obviously didn't given them a passport stamp because of it.

Whether its expired or not you must bring your passport to your AOS interview.

Thanks for all the information, it is appreciated.

Thanks, I went to the link that you posted, but I can't download the application form in order to get my passport renewed, it keeps locking out my computer when I click to download the form I need. Is there a telephone number that I can call to obtain the passport renewal form? I found the address, should I just write and ask for a form?

Would be easier to go try another computer..... happy.gif

I hate it when people misinform people on here! If ytou dont have the information! just dont reply! You do need your passport for AOS and they only stamp it if you have 6 months or more left on the validity of the passport!

I hate that too.

Yes you do need your passport for AOS.

But they stamp it 'approved' if they feel like it. More than six months validity has nothing to do with it.

Then how is it possible that people who have gone to the interview with an expired passport or no passport have been approved?

Yes, everyone needs to be careful what they post, but if we have read from many, many posters that they did not need their passport at the interview, we might be led to believe that it's true. We do know that stamps are not always given and the six month validity applies to VISA interviews not AOS.

michigan, maybe you also need to take your own advice . . .

I've known at least 2 Canadians who didnt even have a passport at all (due to not needing one for US) who had their AOS approved. But that's not the norm, even Canadians need passports now to enter the US.

It may happen. But the NOA that is your interview request specifically asks that you attend with all your immigration documents, and specifically those that prove your entry.
Dr_LHA
Regardless of whether people got away with not having a passport at interview, if you have your expired passport, take it with you!

In my interview, I was actually asked for my expired passport (which expired a few years ago) as well as my current one. You can never take enough documents with you, so take everything you have.

Hi Pauline,

In answer to your message post, regarding the passport stamp:

I did bring my passport with me for the AOS interview. As for the passport stamp, you might not necessarily need it (though they stamped mine anyways), as it says "Temporary I-551" on it. So if you get your green card, that is your "Permanent I-551" (for the time being, until it expires) already. Just show that green card with your passport and you'll be ok travelling. Sorry, I can't help you with the renewing the UK passport situation, as I have never had a UK passport before. Nevertheless, if you do still have your expired UK passport, then why not bring it to the interview with you, as you can never have too much information and paperwork...

Hope this helps. Have a good week.

Ant
