I hope the Duvet thread gets ressurrected. tongue.gif

I'm new to this site but I'd like to spend some time here...I feel like I could learn a lot. You mention duvet thread. I have just returned to the states after my first trip to England and one of the first things I noticed was that everyone had duvets instead of blankets on their beds. I thought it was a good idea...I mean, you can take the covers off and wash them without having to have a US sized washing machine. I don't know what the original thread pertained to but I thought I would do my part to try and resurrect it. I think I have found a lot of things in the UK that the US would do well to adopt. Like mobile phones without contracts, or cashpoints without fees, or chips eaten in a bun like a sandwich...lol. Is anyone else in the states having a seriously hard time finding curry paste??

I found curry paste at Wholefoods. Harris Teeters also have an 'ointernational' asile where you can get very important food items like marmite and Heinz baked beans :-)

Janice, I found a page at BritianUSA, which indicates there might be a few about the place, and also a few tearooms/British restuarants.

And it looks like there's a British Pantry in Redmond. I don't know if that would be easy for you to get to.

My fiance is relieved to know that he'll be moving to Brooklyn-- there's a pie shop in Park Slope!

If the pies aren't good enough there, I can see us importing Fray Bentos in bulk...

Janice, I've checked out this website and it has your favourite, Heinz Baked Beans and also the Robinson's Orange and Pineapple squash. smile.gif

ohh heinz baked beans - I love that on toast - my American fiance think I am mad to have baked beans on toast! He wouldnt even try it (rolls eyes). I am planning to take a case of tins with me when I move to the states - is this possible? does anyone know if we can do that? should I take it with me as access baggae or ship it with some of my other items?

I'd like to share a little story that happened during Easter holiday with my fiance's sister and niece. We were all at his parents house in Sarasota sitting by the pool. We had just finished the Easter egg hunt and the hitting of the Pinata. (something new I introduced to the family where you get a paper mache bunny filled with sweets and take turns hitting it until all the goodies come out) Okay one important thing to note....I stuffed the Pinata with bunny shaped bubble gum. It wasn't until Lucy, Russ's niece came by to sit with us and asked me to show her how to blow a bubble with the bubble gum. So I proceeded to stuff my mouth with the biggest WAD of gum in order to blow a bubble for Lucy. Well needless to say, we got caught by Russ's sister. She scolded Lucy and told her "we don't do that". Apparently bubble gum is not looked upon favorably in the UK. I questioned his sister and told her well in the US bubble gum is very popular. Heck athletes chew it all the time. I got my lesson for the day but the important thing is my fiance had my back and supported me. During his 2 1/2 week visit this past April, I had him chewing on bubble gum and attempting to blow bubbles. That's why I love him. IPB Image

LOADS of people chew gum in the UK. The sister has decided she doesn't want her kid doing that, and I know many parents like that, but it's not an exclusive UK thing at all.

Yes, you can take the tins as long as there is no meat product in them. Pack them well as they do tend to dent easily!

Hmmmm, well it's good to know it's not a UK specific thing because that's how it was portrayed to me that day. "Arlene you must learn UK ways". Regardless, when we have kids we'll let them decide. Thanks for the reply!

My wife tends to get a hard time at UK immigration, but plenty of others seem to sail through no problems. Make sure you have evidence of your status in the USA (so they know he's not trying to settle there) and I'd imagine you could go through the "Non-EU" line with him, but if they need any info from you, they would certainly call for you.

... I've always eaten baked beans on toast, even when I was little, and I'm the USC! (they were American baked beans, though... not Heinz) Could be becuase my mom was the first one that made them that way for me, and she lived in England for a while before I was born and a little afterward too.

hehehe I love Baked Beans on Toast and the only tins available here are Bushes and you know they are ok but not what I am used to.
