Hi, I searched and searched and couldn't find the information I need. Our visa got approved. Once we arrive in the US what are the things we need to do? Is it first getting a SS card and then applying for AOS? I have this order, can someone please let me know if it's correct?

1. apply for SS card 2 or 3 weeks after arriving
2. apply for AOS once SS card is received

What else am I missing?

Also, about how long does it take to get permission to leave the country after arriving in the US (Advanced Parole) and what kinds of reasons are they looking for? Do the reasons have to be health related? What have people used in the past

You can apply for SSN first, although it is not necessary, but I would do it before you get married.. I think its supposed to be easier then.. Then get married, and then file for AOS.. dunno about the Advanced parole thing.. you would find more info on that in the "working and travelling prior to getting a greencard" forum though..

YOu can apply for your SSN card 2 weeks or so after you arrive here, and like the previous poster mentioned it's best to get your SSN before marriage, you can always go back after AOS to change it. Let say you go through JFK you might get a temporary EAD but i am not sure they are still issuing them but even though it's valid for 90 days or until your I-94 from your passport expired.

Once you get your SSN you can apply for your driver's license but some people have encounter problems getting their Driver's license or even getting past the learners permit stage since their I-94 would expire soon.
What We did, Got a non driver ID right away, then a couple of weeks later went back for the driving test and use that driver ID as your ID. and bring proof of address.

IMPORTANT: Gota get married before your 90 days, the earlier the better as once you are married you can file your AOS right away, with that you can file your I-131 advance parole, some people don't do it, but it's best to have it on hand in case of a family emergency.

There's going to be a lot of adjustment to do, as far as missing your family, your friends, specially if you are not working yet, feeling lonely, useless, but with time it will go away, try to get involve in local activities, take some courses at your local community college or adult education center. # 1 be there for each other and when the rough time comes along remember all both of you had to go through to get to this stage
