Since it's so cold today I thought I'd experiment a little by using my scarf as a hijab and looking for people's reactions. Suprisingly enough, each man that I dealt with outside actually talked to me and was super nice................normally they'd be nice I guess but they wouldn't really talk. For example, one guy opened a door for me and said, "here you go".

Anyway it got me to think, hmmmmmmm.....all the hijaabs I see out there are scarves. Why doesn't someone invent a more unique way to cover? Like maybe a hat and scarf, which would serve the purpose but would look more different.

Has anyone seen this?

Here's one example that I found:

these women are thinking outside the box! good.gif

There are loads of ways to do higab. I have seen hat like higabs. Try googling it.

I've seen some Muslim women at my school wearing hooded sweatshirts, with the hoods up and tied. I think its cool for them to explore different ways of being modest, and I think it kind of sends the message to others that Muslims can be integrated in American society, while practicing their religion. smile.gif
doodlebug
I see that a lot here too working at the college I'm at right now. I also see women with baseball caps on and a scarf and I wonder if they are muslim or not. That would be kind of cool to wear a red sox cap and a red scarf. lol
jordanianprincess
We have some close family friends that are Muslim, the daughters don't cover up but the mom does. She doesn't use a hijab though, she has a variety of different hats she wears that cover her whole head, or she will wrap a scarf around her hair almost like a turban but cuter. She dresses really conservative so it ends up being the same result. What I really like about her is that she finds a way to incorporate it with her clothing and style. good.gif

this is kinda cool, though the store isn't working right now.

There are plenty of unique ways to use a scarf. My current favorite style is to use a cotton underscarf, and then take a shayla in a contrasting color, about 1/4 back on my head. I tie it in a bun in back, and then pair it with earrings and a turtleneck.

The turks definately have the corner on the cool scarf market

They insert a little plastic rim at the fold in the scarf, and sometimes starch it.
amal
this post is per my husband...he says they are all lovely but he doesn't consider it hijab if it shows any part of the ears or neck...he does like the style though..he is asking his sister about the hat type ones right now as we speak...i'll let ya know....
rahma
Meh, none of the scarve are really hijab. Hijab is your attitude, the way you carry yourself, how you interact with people. A way of dress is just one part of hijab smile.gif Putting a scarf on one's head doesn't necessary mean that you're observing hijab.
moody
Right on, rahma good.gif

I've seen so many girls in tight, tight jeans and tops with a scarf on their heads. That's not what I call higab.

Double sided sticky tape---or toupe tape always works best for me...its sticks to anything and it is cheap!!!

ok..he asked his sister ..i was curious about the "hijab-as a head cover" if the hat style would work... they all said no since it was just a bit too revealing.. i'm only speaking of the head cover...i'm not speaking hijab in the full form..just the head cover part.... is that a more acceptable description?

Thanks Amal!!! I would wear a scarf with the hat though so my neck would be covered. I see what he's saying if it were just a hat though.

Oh man, now I'm having flashbacks to my college hijabi days, before I had to dress all business like for the law office.

My favorite hijab was my oscar the grouch hat, paired with a turtleneck. I pulled it down pretty far and paired it with earrings. I'm def going to have to dig around for this hat and rock out this weekend!

Mine didn't have pon poms on the top though.

I like the Kuala Lumpur fashioned cap styles Doodle posted, more of the style I wear. And even thout the Turkis scarfs have fab patterns, I donnot think the style of fixing them are in any unique. I think they make the head look bigger, the babbuska style.
I prefer the cap style and the pharoah styles.
My problem with hijeb is I cannot seem to get them to stay on without twisting and turning, unless I use about 25 boddy pins and hijeb pins laughing.gif Maybe cos of the style I wear, but cos I am just really apt with things like this.
Also I know, since I do this, but wearing multiple scarfs (for fasion purposes I guess) I get either too hot or I cannot breathe, my neck get stiff.laughing.gif
Hijeb Fashion Ideas:
Wearing a beeny hat over a plain black hijab in the winter gives a funky effect.
Wearing two scarfs over each other. A very light patterned see through one other a plainer coloured one. Interesting effect
Plain coloured hijab (with sparkly bits) and a pin a large flower clip to the hijab just above the ear area.
A snood or beret (my wintertime favs)

Hijeb Wrap

Headcovers

I have hijeb styles on my pc, I will post them in abit.

Do you use underscarves Henia? That stops the slippage on mine.

I want one of every color. Too bad I don't have a spair $88 lying around. I hope they're still in style when I make it back to egypt, cuz I'm seriously bringing an empty bag just to stuff with scarves and clothes.

I do and I don't you know. In the summer of course not. But most I find in the shoppes where I live are too tight. Or maybe my head is too big?! blink.gif I am not sure. I found some in Algerie which work great, but the prob is they never have colour selection. mad.gif
Also there is a big variation between women wearing the hijeb right under the jowl of the neck and others who cover the jowl. For me, in the winter I cover, in the winter no...but if I had a double chin then of course I would cover:lol:

Just checked the site Rahma, wow love it! Unfortunately I donnot have $88 either. But I saved the site to my favs and try to invest in them after this whole INS thing is over with.laughing.gif But another ques, does any here wear niqaab, gloves or arm gauntlets? Plz speak up! good.gif
rahma
I wear arm guantlets when I run, cuz I wear a short sleeve running shirt. I also wear them when I have a wide sleeved abaya, or a short sleeve or 3/4 length sleeve shirt. All my guantlets come from al muminat, and are the extra long variety.

I can see myself wearing these two to work. Now I just have to figure out how to make them!! My younger sister-in-law played with my head for over an hour trying to make different styles for me to see which one worked. She did it so fast though I could never remember how to do it!! I'll have to take notes the next time I go.

Yes modern modest wear is easy and fun ...to look for, make and style... have you been to shikr.com? I personally like clothes like this much more then the old jilbeb and abaya. I mean they are nice too, but I prefer to mix it up.
I think styling the hijeb scarf is more difficult.

Yes, those are more modern modest wear. I prefer these too. I mean I like my abaya and jilbeb(it has it's purpose), but I am not trying to wear a chador. I think I scare my family when I wear it. laughing.gif
I just love the styles on Shukr clothes. They offer modren Turkis, Maroc and trouser style clothing. Much more appealing here in the West. AndI think this type of clothing is much more *accepted* at the workplace. I mean sure you have right to cover all up, but it is bizarre if one day you come in to work with a chador on, when before you came in minis blink.gif you know!

Well, when I run it's functional. All long sleeve running shirts I've come across are of a slightly heavier material than short sleeved ones. When you're running in the summer, that extra weight can be a killer. So, I'll wear a short sleeve shirt, paired with the arm gauntlets, so that I don't sweat to death.

And, sometimes I just like to be different. A baggy tshirt with gauntlets looks spiffy to me smile.gif My other choice is to wear a long sleeve white shirt underneath, but those all had tight sleeves too, so i thought, why not skip a layer and throw on some gauntlets?
doodlebug
oh i never thought of the fact that short sleeved shirts are thinner! Cool!
rahma
Most runners don't worry about modesty issues, so they don't create lightweight long sleeved running shirts. Longer sleevers are for colder weather, thus are heavier. I wish I could sew, so I coudl make my own running clothes.

Personally I donnow unsure.gif but I guess there are fashionable t-shirts out there, which hijebed women want to wear (some clever writingon them, etc) and to be modest they either wear a long sleeve under it, ooooooor as Rahmas says she does wear this arm guantlets. Also, per Rahma's suggestion with a wide armed top (abaya and jilbebs) manhy women wear them also.
I have seen the more conservatively hijebed women doing this. The ones who wear niqeb and all they utilise these more, as they tend to wear many many layers, but it really boggles my mind how they can bear all the layers in the heat? blink.gif I guess they get extra ajr points laughing.gif Also is this a Egyptien thing? Cos I have seen mostly Egyptien women who use this and all the www say Egyptien arm cover or guantlets unsure.gif
Another thing I cannot understand: why some women wear thos plastic films things (what they are called I donnow) on the outside of their hijeb...if you have to use that why not put it in the inside, between the 2 pieces of fabric...it looks tacky all shiny showing out. blink.gif
Nor do I understand why in the Maghreb women use the white bourka with no pin to fasten it tight aorund the face, how stupid is it to be holding it all the day while you are out. Instead utilising both hands, you have one hand holding it together under the neck .... blink.gif wacko.gif and all you see is like eye out and part of a nose:wacko:
