My Father-in-law wants to know if he can claim me (the Immigrant) on his taxes as a reduction as he is sponsoring me. I'm almost 100% sure the answer is no, but my knowledge of US Tax laws is pretty low, so if someone can explain to me why, then I'd be really appreciative.
Thanks,
Michael

This is a question your father-in-law should be asking a Tax-Accountant. I would think no, unless he is also still claiming your spouse on his taxes.
My parents stopped claiming me when I turned 21, and started doing my own income tax returns, also your spouse should be doing a joint filing showing you on their return.

You need to review the dependent rules for a qualifying person. If you satisfy the requirements then you can.
However, I agree with YuandDan that seeking tax advice on an immigration forum is not the best place.

Well I agree, but I thought it was a black and white issue regarding sponsored immigrants.
Thanks,

Why would your father-in-law be able to claim you as a dependent???
Do you live with him?
Does he pay more than 50 % of your living expenses
You should be filing jointly with your wife....

Nothing with the IRS is black and white
