Could someone just quickly clarify this for me?

My husband's 2yr green card expires this May, so we will be applying next month to remove the conditions. Now, how soon will he get the letter stating it's pending (roughtly)? We are traveling to Scotland in June, so all he needs to do to get back in the country is show is expired green card and the letter?
