Learn the Koran or go to jail

[b]SOme more bizarro news coming from KSA: A count in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a man convicted of drug use to learn the Quran off by heart in six months. The sentence was given instead of six months prison. Saudi courts are based on Sharia law, but Judges have wide discretion on sentencing. If the man does become a hafiz, one who is able to recite the Quran from memory, he will go to jail for one year, double the orginal sentence.

I have one thing to say... Dude, that sux! If someone told me to remember the Quran by heart in 6 months or go to jail for a year, I think I would go to jail. I don't think there is anyway for that man to rmember the whole thing by heart when it takes years and years! Good luck to him though!
Jenn!
So memorizing the Quran is punishment? Horrible.

Like parents who punish children by making them read or something...

I read this article about a week ago. From what I understand, he had a choice in the jail sentence or becoming a hafiz. Becoming a hafiz was seen as a chance at rehabilitation.

Yes it would seem impossible, but maybe some are able to do it.
