It made me sad to see the other thread go so downhill so I thought I would try to start another one since I do think there are many things we can learn from each other on this subject. I don't venture much past the first page so if another thread for this was started already, I apologize.

Many medicines that you can get over the counter back home you need a prescription for here - and those are hard to come by, and expensive. So, bring a good sized supply of your own medicine with you.

Also, when your sweetie gets here, take him on a tour of your medicine cabinet.

To get a prescription you also need a doctor's appt. Usama didn't understand that concept at all.

Ahmed seems a little confused on the fact that i can stay home from work (sick) and still get paid and when i try to explain accumulated vacation/sick leave. I have tried to explain to him no in your first few years at a job you probably wont be allowed a month off to go back home. We already went thru the drug store thing, i told him i had been to the drug store, "thats allowed there" so im sure that will be one of first stops and that alot of medicines can come from the normal grocery store.

also he could not understand why i would leave the heat on all day when i was at work (with snow and ice one the ground)

One thing to remember to NOT give your SO is ..FLEXERIL (or generic name is cyclobenzaprine)...
My husband got a prescription from the doctor for that due to some pain from pulled muscles..
Ok, that is normal, right??...NOOOO... ok let me 'splain.. we have a dog . A dog he likes but hates to have in the house due to reasons I have discussed in previous threads. ok so he won't touch the floor with bare feet coz of the potential of touching the dog hair. (hehe silly but true)... anyway.. so he took one of the muscle relaxers and within about 30 minutes, he was FACE DOWN AND FLAT OUT ON THE FLOOR!!!!! I said, come to bed..he waved his fingers and said "I'm ok just leave me to lay here all the night" hehehe...He is afraid to take them now so we use Ibuprofen..... Takes longer but relaxes the muscles just enough....hehehehe

Hi girls! I sure have missed everybody!!!! It has been killing me to be away so long but with the new houseguest and stuff...I just haven't had aaaaany time for the computer. I had to ask my husband to make supper last night just so I could pay the bills that I hadn't had time to deal with.

that is another thing..tell them about bills...interest...credit cards (and why they're evil even though you have 5 of them)... Noor still can't figure those things out!

I don't know about other countries but most of the clothes (esp jeans) are kinda dorky in Egypt. They are high waist which is weird for men. I told Moh to bring what he wants but he'll need to buy some more stylish clothes once he's here. Weird jeans and shirts with dorky sayings are only cute in Egypt.

What is with the tight jeans men wear over there? When I went to Jordan I brought my fiance some jeans, looser fitting jeans, he was so relieved, LOL.

Mooooooody, I missed ya! Any word yet?

yeah...mine did bring an 80's style t-shirt with great big orange and black writing on it...i won't let him wear it out of the house...it hits him just above the belly button... hehehe...

I missed you too, honey! Nope nothing yet sad.gif You??

About the tight pants...I have a pic of Moh in which he appears to have a camel toe from the tightness of the pants. That can't be comfy. Last time I was there he did buy a nicer pair that fit better and had a nice wash. I saw one guy in Cairo with greazy slicked back hair, tight button down shirt (buttoned down to reveal chest hair), gold chains, and tight, tight pants. Wow! He looked like he belonged in Saturday Night Fever. laughing.gif

Oh Oh... I have one! Its not as simple as buying a car, jumping in and off you go. There are such things as licensing, taxes, gas, maintenance and insurance. There is also a little matter of LEARNING HOW TO DRIVE FIRST, there are these things called traffic laws you have to know before you drive and a wee little thing called a driver's test you have pass before they give you the purdy laminated card that gives you permission to terrorize the roads. (but I am a meanie)

oh, oh, oh...and another thing to remind them of is...not only do you have to get an appointment to see the doctor..but also expect to pay somewhere between 30 and 50 dollars before you leave the office. (more or less depending on your insurance situation) Noor was quite shocked...

I really hope this thread can maintain a light atmosphere to share our experiences. It makes me smile to see others that have had similar experiences as we have had yes.gif

I take back my Levi statement. I just remember him saying he once got a pair of Levis for 5 dollars so I took him to the Levi store and he saw the price at 50 dollars. he just about passed out!

Another thing I couldn't stress enough to him was, You have to be patient in order to make any money here. You can't just start right off the bat at 30 bux an hour...you have to start small and work your way up (unless you are fortunate enough to have money to start off with or have jobs available nearby in your expected field).

I should have also told him that iced tea is not poison! He saw me put ice in it and said "no no that is bad ... not good" I said "taste it" and he has LOVED iced tea since that day ... he has told all his family and friends to try this new idea of ice tea...they all think he's nuts! hehehe laughing.gif

Amal you can get levis for 5 or 7 JOD in the second hand shops in downtown Irbid. They also have a Levis factory in Jordan. It's all about the trademark in Jordan.

Ok here's my tip. Your significant other will not be use to the food here at first and will probably get constipated and be embarassed to tell you. Another thing if your SO is on the thin side like mine is they might want to bring a lot of jeans and dress pants. If i can donate some of my adipose tissue/fat to my husband I would laughing.gif

ok, that must have been what he was talking about! Beings that he lived in Irbid, I'm sure he went to many-a second hand store there. That also makes a lot more sense as to why they would be so cheap good.gif thanks

He told me something the other day...he said good shoes are hard to come by in Jordan (unless you want to pay top dollar for them) and that he was surprised at the cheap, good quality shoes that wally world has. He spent a bunch of money on 2 pairs of shoes before he came here and they are the most uncomfortable things I've ever had on my feet (yes we wear the same size shoes). He won't even wear them now that we bought him some good walking shoes from a "reputable sports store" on sale for 25 dollars.

Yeah, I would say to bring up the cost of shoes before they come here...it just may save them some cash... good.gif
