I really need to find another job and was wondering where I would have the most success. When I started searching a year ago, I gave about 80 job applications, answering newspaper ads and online job sites. Called to 3-4 interviews, didn’t get hired. Finally ended up where I am through a temp agency.

You definitely need to network because it's ten times easier getting your foot in the door if you know someone who already works there.
Aside from that you need to really have a good resume. Have someone give yours a lookover and maybe you just need to spruce it up a bit.

I'm on my third job since college. I got the first one through on-campus interviewing, the second one through dice.com and the third one (my current job) through a career fair which I read about on Hotjobs.com. I am starting my fourth job later this month (after many years with my current employer) and I got that through Monster.com.
The only jobs I have ever gotten through networking were during college.. part-time retail and on-campus lab stuff. My network has been completely unhelpful since graduation. The only jobs I ever hear about from my family/friends/ex-colleagues are jobs that I don't really want. I believe that speaks to the poor quality of my network, more than it does to the concept of networking itself.

Is your experience directly relevant to the type of position you are seeking? If not, you may think about emphasizing the transferable skills of all those years. For example: organizing events, supervising staff, resolving conflicts, dealing with vendors, etc.

All the work I did was on volunteer basis - got accommodation & food at a few places. Except for the final 2.5 years I got $125 a month honorarium (no accommodation or food) – Indian govt said I wasn’t qualified for work visa because the amount was too small.
On a funny note, one of the many jobs I applied for was at the DHS working on immigration applications (prob including K1s too)! I got to the final stages (took 3+ months of applications, interviews, drug test etc.) before they rejected me on the basis that I had no proof of salary while in India! Yes I had no proof – CUZ I DIDN’T GET ANY! (Yah I told them before but they ignored that, and the official letter I sent from my workplace). In the end I was glad I didn’t get that job – paid only $1,200 a month, not really enough to survive in this city!

Past few jobs in the same company : emailed someone I know at the company with my resume, also sent it via company's website. But sending as personal email was the first contact.

My most successful job search started and ended with my college's job board. The company I ended up working for called me in for an interview based on my resume and I've worked there for three and a half years now.

Best job search: Local adverts, friends, temp agency
Thank for all the great replies!
Dug out this thread for an update. After over two months of intense search, just yesterday I got HIRED by the county! Whooohoo! Looks like a great atmosphere and great people. I filled out an online application on the County website for Administrative Assistant, got called for the exam, placed Rank 7 out of about 150 people who took the exam. Next thing I knew different departments in the county were calling me for interviews, but the first one was the best. I start on April 23rd. SO happy finally something stable!

After a 20 year career wth the Government, Monster led me to my current position. Check it out.
Also, you may want to look at CareerJournal.com, from the Wall Street Journal, many career fields are represented there.
