Mohamed is here now from Morocco. In his visa they attached a card and it is stamped Employment Authorized and then there is a number. I know I sound dumb but does this mean he can work before getting a SS card? Will emplyees use that number on it to be able to hire him? Has anyone had any difficulty finding work with this? We were married on Friday and I am waiting for the certificate before we mail the SS card information. If you could please help I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
Janelle

you will need a social security # or a TIN.

also he is employment authorised for 90 days, the duration of his K1 visa. He will still have to apply for the EAD to be able to continue working. Remember, he shouldnt work without authorisation which could cause a problem for any company hiring him if he goes out of employment authorisation while waiting on his EAD, which also takes around 90 days.

Hi Hicham,
I am glad to hear that you are here in the US! Congratulations to you both! Thank you for the input. We were going to wait until the SS card but I thought maybe if he could work that would be helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Janelle,

Theoretically yes. He needs to apply for a SS card and be able to show a prospective employer that he has applied. Then he will have 90 days to receive the card and show it to the employer. See USCIS form I-9 and USCIS document M279 Handbook for Employers.

But some employers may want to see the SS card upfront.
