I think it's about time for another ME/NA picture thread. Please share pretty (or not so pretty) pictures of the ME/NA. These can be your own pictures, or pictures you've found online, in magazines, or anywhere else a pictures of the ME/NA might show up.

Also, please exercise caution when posting pictures that have you/your SO in it. Pictures can (and have) been taken and used offsite for malicious purposes.

Great idea, rahma! I don't know if I've posted this one before, but I love it because it's so eerie. (I wasn't intending for it to come out blurry, but I think that's what makes it so cool!)

Also from Black Iris, a history and pictures of The Citadel (and the Souq)

Definately browse through the rest of his blog, cuz he's got lots of picture posts.

These are some of my pictures from Cairo, December 2003/January 2004:

In Khan Khalili, the tourist marketplace. A man carrying bread.

Kitty in Khan Khalili. Kitties are all over Cairo, and I wanted to huggle them all, even the mangy dirty ones (after I had taken them home and given them a bath, if my husband had let me, lol)

The pyramids at Giza. I think most people have the impression that they're off in the middle of the desert, and you have to ride camels to get to them, but Giza (suburb/twin city of Cairo) butts up right next to them. Giza is the place we stayed the first time I was in Cairo, 2 miles from the pyramids. I love it and miss it.

Minaret at Al Azhar, beautiful masjid.

Fabulous photos !! good.gif

The Middle East is really a photographer's dream -- everywhere you look, there is a Kodak moment waiting to be snapped. And the light is fantastic.

Jenn your "blur" photo is cool. It reminds me of one I have where my camera did a similar thing... let me try to dig it up.

I really love seeing all these places I hope to visit one day ! Keep 'em coming !!

While I agree with you to some extent about showing the beauty of MENA, there is an obvious reality to WOM's pictures. If you do a google search for photo's of Ramallah, all you will find is photos similar to these and worse. Maybe it would be better fitting to post photos of Ramallah before all the conflict began in the Middle East but where to find them, and do they represent what is left today? This is all that is left to show for the most part. Although these places are beautiful and always will be, they no longer hold the beauty they once did.

I don't see these photo's as being political and I don't even know why you are getting defensive about them. She didn't post anything that is not true or any remarks that are directed to anyone. Israel has also suffered indeed, but Israel still holds it beauty and always will because it has the resources to pick up and move on as do many other MENA countries that have been attacked by terrorists.

How is she not being respectful!!!!! Just because you don't agree with her photos, there are many that do. These photos show the only reality that is left for Palestine. You have a choice of which photos to show for Israel. You can show photos of damaged buildings from bombings as can I in Jordan, but the difference is we have alot more beauty to show. This is all that is left for them, do you not get that?

Charles I am going to try to be as patient with you as I can. No one in here has ever said Israel has not suffered, they most certainly have. However they have alot of beauty still, and they also have the resouces to recover. Jordan was attacked by suicide bombers as was Egypt, but they recovered because they have the resources. This is all that is left of Palestine, so should WOM show photos of things that no longer exist?

3 egyptian teenagers, looks to be near the pyramids. I picked it for their hijab style that's apparently all the rage in Cairo - multilayer shayalas. I think they're layering 3 or 4. I've heard that some girls are up to 5 or 6. I can only manage 2 without it getting too heavy and falling off my head laughing.gif

I think if any hatred is exposed by the pictures WOM posted, it is not her hatred for Israel, but the other way around.

Suicide bombings and kidnappings are deplorable. I absolutely condemn both. However, to compare these infrequent, heinous acts to the the injustices Palestinians face on a daily basis is shocking and I think it is exactly this attitude that results in the conflict never being solved.
