Well, in a truly British manner it HAS to be Fish & Chips, simply because they are VERY scarce here in the USA. I also miss a good curry though. Can't beat it: vegetable or prawn dhansak, pilau rice and a peshwari naan. Also a BIG fan of butter chicken. *drools*

We should have a drooly emoticon! good.gif

Drink wise? I rarely drink alcohol, when I do it tends to be wine which I can get over here. Otherwise it is soft drinks which are plentiful over here too!

mags....I have re-created fish and chips..it is pretty darn close. We even had a big fish and chips night last time Chris was here! To be honest...as many times as I've gone over to England in the past 3 years I've not had a curry..Had a thai curry but and plenty of naan bread. But no indian. Not since I was 13. I will....in Feb. I promise

I love a good pint at the pub. I don't miss any drinks really. I like my drinks super cold, Chris family always keeps my Lemonade in the fridge for me...not typical for them!
HuffyTheSlayer
I miss Fish and Chips, too. I think Mark and I's first meal together was Fish and Chips down in Brighton. biggrin.gif

Hee, I work in an office with another Brit and an American who spent their teens in Australia. So we talk about British foods a lot.

I think Fish and Chips will be the first thing I eat when I go back to the UK and I'll also have to get a good curry at some point, too. smile.gif
JAYKE
My vegetarian hubby misses full English breakfast, vegetarian version, and proper Yorkshire puddings.
Me? Malteasers and a good cider.
glitter-star
Has to be a full English and Irn Bru - drink of the Gods!

-Tracey
HuffyTheSlayer
Ooh, a fry up. Mmmm. At least you can kind of emulate that. Although I did use a homepride sauce the other week to make a nice Korma. smile.gif
Happy Bunny
chips with mushy peas smile.gif lol well it's up there, but I really gotta think more about it...

I LOVE curry and chips from the chinese...or cheesy chips with garlic.....and I LOVE me a great Indian meal. And don't laugh but my fave all time drunken food is beans on toast with cheese...

and I love fried parsnips...and a Sunday dinner! HATED the full English...don't get me started!

Fave drinkie that I miss is that a Smir Ice here is a malt bevvy and there it's with Vodka. Love me a turbo shandy!

omG I am so effing hungry

and cornish pasties! I forgot pasties...
Happy Bunny
Actually on second thought, the bevvy I miss the most is the Jersey & Guernsey milk from Tescos. You know the one where you open the bottle and there's a teensey bit of cream on the top? ommmmmmmmmmmmmG
melly
Can someone explain to me why curry is such a big thing in England? I haven't been there yet but I've heard alot about how everyone loves curry. I don't understand the connection.

Erm, at a guess I would say it's quite pop over there based on the fact that there's a big Indian community there. Kinda like being able to get really great Cuban food in Miami, yanno?

That's my speculative guess smile.gif

and I was remiss in not saying a big YAY! for such a great thread...cheers Ajames!

Am I limited to just one? laughing.gif

ANYthing chocolate, preferably Galaxy. Fish and chips, Yorkshire pudding are both particularly tasty. Wish we had something like Ribena here too.

Their damn loaf bread is even better than ours. I about gorged myself on toast. laughing.gif Oooh and the bacon - its not that streaky crap like we get here - its 'back' bacon. Yum yum!

BTW currys gross me out. I don't like 'weird' foods anyway (Chinese, Japanese, Thai, all that crap grosses me out. I'm surprised I like Mexican and Italian!) but curry is particularly gross. Oddly, that's the one thing Chas thinks he's really going to miss when he moves here. laughing.gif

I like yorkies...."Don't Feed The Birds"! Haa

I am so shocked they are allowed to have that slogan still....with the PC that goes on in England!!

OHHH and the bread...yum...and cheese. RedLeicester YUmmo.

Can't do the mushy peas....and I am not a big Bacon fan. It is really to salty for me.

mmm...food. Thinking of more

Is there something that you take over to England to cook that your inlaws/family like you to do??
Boiler
Greene King IPA

Sunday Roast in a decent pub

Neither available in the US.

okay I'll answer first. My inlaws love me to make a mexican meal for them. Taught them (amandas version*thats me*) of quesadillas, and fajitas, and tacos...guacamole...homemade salsa...They love it.

Last time I bought fresh tuna steaks, did garlic/basil mashed potatos , and asparagus(I know it is spelled wrong) and they loved it too.

I love to cook. But man I get nervous making things perfect for Chris fam! smile.gif

Those are quite nice smile.gif Do they not have them here?

I ate a bit of a Yorkie once then I realized it was a Yorkie so I haven't eaten one since. D laughs when I take the huff over the sexist effing candy bar. It was good, mind you, but as you said before, it boggles the mind how that slogan is tolerated...lol, the litigious society we are here in America...Nestle woulda been sued ages ago.

Oh, but my fave choccie bar there is a Toffee Crisp....went and got one at the World Mkt and it was about $1.30! wacko.gif
chloe
mmm, the peanut butter chunky Kit Kat is the best!!

Mr Kipling cherry bakewells
Chicken & Mushroom pot noodle
Kebab ( Ive tried a gyro (sp), similiar but not quite the same
Sweet n Sour king prawn balls
Heinz salad cream
Toad in the hole
Liver pate on french stick
lamb pasanda, mushroom fried rice and a peshwari nan....Im drooling
cheap, crappy lemonade
sausage in batter!!!!!..(how will I survive without?)
chips with curry sauce

...this could go on, but I need to go raid the fridge!
Thingee
-Really nice veggie burgers, black bean burgers too...they do have them here, but they're garbage in comparison.
-Garlic rice
-falafel(I probably botched the spelling)
-the beer

It's just in general much easier to eat vegetarian "real" food there...I go out to eat here and the only things on the menu are salad or a veggie burger, more often than not that 'veggie burger' is a soy thing with one slice of water chestnut and a shred of carrot.

I've never cooked for my future inlaws, nor would I most likely..they're all cooks and I'm a bit intimidated. SO loves my lasagna, fried rice, and tuna concotion.
CherryXS
Surprisingly (for a desi) Vegetable Stroganoff (a lot of restaurants in UK actually have it on the menu--in the US, the word "Stroganoff" is ALMOST ALWAYS associated with "beef").
garyandmarylou
I love the chocolate in the UK, Galaxy minstrels are my fav......yummmm Then again Roses are nice too, well it all is laughing.gif
I agree with Lisa on the drunk food lol my mate Janet makes the BEST cheese on toast
Fish and Chips
As far as a drink, well when im there i drink beer (Bud) or have a white wine, i dont drink often
Do like a Club Orange Soda tho
Gary's favs
Ulster Fry
Sausage Rolls
Fish and Chips
Chunky Kit Kats, Flake....he hates our chocolate
A nice Chinese with gravy

I havent cooked for the in-laws yet, when they were over in Sept the MIL wanted to cook so who was i to say no laughing.gif tongue.gif
deathbydalbhat
This thread is making me hungry, or should I say peckish wink.gif

I spent 3 months in the UK (Bletchley) 12 years ago and took quite a fancy to the food, especially the Indian food(Balti houses rule!), real fish and chips like I had in Newcastle(none of that frozen cr@p), and the sweets, oh God the sweets... Jammie Dodgers, Jaffa cakes, Cadbury flake bars, mince pies(I was there at Christmas), homemade trifle...

I'm not a huge fan of the Sunday roast dinner, though...

I gained 12 pounds in 3 months, go figure... laughing.gif
HuffyTheSlayer
I usually make sausage rolls for my relatives now. smile.gif They love them. Especially my husband, his sister and his brother-in-law. I use the recipe from this thread: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...l=sausage+rolls

Thanks for the recipe, Sukie. smile.gif

Try Reed's ginger beer - it's available at Whole Foods. It has little pieces of ginger in it. Its great, especially when you are sick to your stomach, I find.

The classic bacon sandwich, Im told Irish bacon in America is similar

Scottish or English fry up breakfast, easily made at home

Fish and Chips, still on the look out for a good one in our part of Virginia

Sunday roast dinner, including yorkshire puddings, also easily made at home

Indian Food, I've seen indian resturants in the US, just not so many

Fray Bentos pies, I hope to find some of those over there soon

Drinks wise, I like jack and coke anyway laughing.gif

Wow, interesting. I used to love beef strognoff when I was a kid. Now that I am veg(and practicing Hindu), no way. I'll bet it would be good with paneer, actually. I might try that.

Robinson's No Added Sugar Apple and Blackcurrant. In fact, I miss ALL squash/cordial. You just can't get it here. All the equivalent drinks are pre mixed and FULL of sugar. I have managed to find one that isn't, but it IS a rarity.

Val, I dunno...I was never ever a milk drinker until I drank that....I mean I never ate the cream on top, lol...but the milk underneath it was something I've never tasted before!

And the nutritional value on the one I used to get was not that fattening...v little fat grams, which always confused me cos it's so good!

Well to be honest I guess I have to admit that I did use frozen steak fries. But I found that if you cook them first..in oil. til they are almost done...then you cook the fish up...then slide the chips back in...it gives it the chippy flavour. Always let your fish rest on top of the chips as well...get the full grease affect! *smile*

I've done them a few times and honestly being that nothing is as good as a chippy...they are still pretty good.

It is a bit of a process for the cook. Much more fun to do it in small batches for you and your S/O.
rkl57
living in Westside Los Angeles there are very few British foodstuffs that you can't get -- the British pubs do decent enough fish and chips, shepherd's pies, sunday roast and what have you. And the Indian food is proper Indian as opposed to "British Indian" (though you can get that too) so it's better than yer average curry house in the UK.

Never been a fan of the English breakfast - I miss American breakfasts in the UK

What I miss most is CHEESE. THe sharp cheddars, the stiltons, the creamy lancashires, red leicesters, sage derbys, windsor reds, etc etc

Nothing would make me happier than a trip to Neil's Yard cheese shop in London.

I miss cheese too. For our wedding I am having Stiltons, a Red Leichester, a Cottswold (which I am unfamilar with) and a few other cheeses.

Never was a fan of english breakfasts mainly because I don't really eat american ones either...

I do miss having a fantastic strawberry tart from Tesco for pudding!

It isn't a soda. It is a highly concentrated fruit juice that you add one part of to eight parts water. The UK has cordial/squash everywhere. It is the second most popular drink after soda, for kids.

It is just nice because it isn't full of the additives crap that you get over here in the USA.
garyandmarylou
Our local shop has Ribena and Robinsons there, until Gary showed me what it was i never knew what he was talking about when he asked for cordial.

Yeah I know soda was the wrong word for me to use. Not a fan of sweet drinks in general. I like Robinsons bitter lemon my self. smile.gif

first of all. I think I noticed Glitter star mention IrnBru and I saw Seattle. If you ever venture to snohomish, there is a place called Piccadillly Circus Pub & restaurant and apparently they have Irn Bru. I haven't been there and never tried Irn Bru. However it could be like how US Guinness is....weak. lol (as in when they import it they make it all pastuerized and nasty)

What I miss (even if I am American)....
Decent Sausages!!!!
Galaxy which THANK GOD I can drive 30 min to get at the local (sorta) British shop. (I guess they have their own sausages too but I have yet to try them)
Yorkshire tea (THANK GOD they have that too)
a Decent Pint! lol (like Guinness without pasteurization)
.....and MOST of all...my Fiance as he is still over there...but I suppose he is not food or drink...but its something I miss from the UK anyway. crying.gif (going over for Valentines though!! kicking.gif )

one more thing..... TANGO!!!! lol nothing matches it.
Madame Cleo
I would miss decent bread if I didn't make it myself. Not sure why Americans like their bread to taste like cake!

I miss Jaffa Cakes and decent bacon and sausage.

I just had a delivery of Ribena and Bisto kicking.gif

Everything Cadbury...especially Flake.

However, I really like many of the things that they have here that I couldn't have in England, especially my SO:D biggrin.gif

I didn't know they pasteurised the Guiness, hmmm.
