Hi!!
Iam going to apply for my SSN for first time this week, I am a k1 visa holder and got married a month ago, do you know any tips for getting a ssn after marriage?
Im wondering because I would like my social security card to be with my married name. By the way I sent the package of my AOS yesterday.
Any comments?

bradschry&samira,

In some SSA regions applying in your married name creates problems, because your name will not match the information about you in the USCIS' SAVE data base. The SSA is required to check SAVE to confirm your immigration status. In such situations, better to apply for the card in your maiden name, without mentioning that you are married, then get a new card in your married name after adjusting status or getting an EA card in your married name.

Also, you must apply for your SS card within 76 days of entry to the USA or you will have to wait until you have applied for and received an EA card or have adjusted status.

I just got back fromt he SSA office after applying to change the name on my card and he said everything was good. I brought in a certified copy of my marriage liceanse and passport and my liceanse. However, I already had a SSN in my maiden name.
