Well I see another thread has reached the point of lockdown due to violating the Terms of Service. (Hope it wasn't anything I said -- if so, I hope one of the mods/admins will let me know.)
It's really too bad because it was an important discussion.
Surely there's a way to discuss these issues in a mature manner without TOS violations. I know people become extremely passionate and emotional about certain topics, but we really need to step away from making it personal.
Also, I've always wondered.... does the poster who violates the TOS get a notice from the mod or admin explaining where he/she went amiss ? Of course I am not the judge and jury on TOS violations. But from my spectator's seat, what appear to be the perpetrators of flagrant violations often come back to do the same thing again and again. I was just wondering if a PM or email is sent to say "This is what you did wrong."
I also want to point out that the majority of threads in this Forum are quite respectful and very helpful -- I salute you ladies and gentlemen for that !

I've received nothing and was wondering about why it got locked down myself. I was hoping we could examine other issues, as well. I hope someone knows. I often wonder why some threads that are nastyfests from beginning to end survive and others don't. I didn't think that our thread got that far off in comparison. It would be nice to know what rule(s) specifically was violated so to avoid it next time.

I thought your last post about the SO position on Israel would be important to discuss.
(From not being on VJ much, I don't know how many times that position has been discussed... but i thought it could possibly be interesting...)

I'd like to know too. I didn't get any email or pm or anything so I have no idea what TOS was violated. It didn't seem as nasty as some others that stay open.

I don't remember ever seeing it before, and it occured to me when some brought up not wanting to knowingly marry a racist that a related issue would be Arab/Muslim/Jewish conflict and awareness about attitudes regarding that.

I very much wanted to respond on that subject. Perhaps a new thread can be started. However, having longggggg experience in discussing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict here on VJ

, I can assure you -- there are members (not necessarily ME/NA peeps) who will insist on turning it quite nasty. So put on your Hazmat suits if you want to wade into that one !

As a Jewish woman married to a Muslim MENA man, I was really very interested in the topic. In general, I wish we discussed these things more. And, while I was pretty shocked by some of the responses to the honor killing issue, I did not find the discussion itself offensive or particularly mean-spirited.

I seem to recall that a PM (or email) is sent when a person's account is suspended, but as I haven't ever been, I'm not sure if there's detail to the extent of "this is what you did wrong". I don't think the same thing happens for TOS violators who aren't suspended. I think it would be a good idea for people to know, but on a board this large and with the limitations of few moderators, it's probably too time-intensive.
Of course, taking a deep breath and walking away for 5 minutes when one wants to respond emotionally would probably alleviate some of the TOS violation-type text too. *grin*
As for the thread in question here, it probably was you MK, you lil troublemaking type!

Well, I reported the post that clearly violated the TOS by implying that a certain poster should have never been born. Sorry, but that's crossing the line. I think it would have been sufficient to notify that poster of the violation and/or give them a suspension. My own personal feeling is not that the thread should get locked, but perhaps even removing the offending would post would ensure that the thread can continue despite the rude interruptions.

I agree, I didn't want it to get closed either and I think it's too bad that it got closed but that one comment certainly did cross the line and come out of no where. I was hoping that the poster would be dealt with but not in closing the thread.
Ewok, can the thread be re opened?

the thread was locked down due to reports made about the post that was highly insulting to Sarah. I think we can continue with the discussion as szsz was turning it.

FWIW, my 2 cents, having just perused the thread.
From what I could see the issues that had caused some friction were being resolved and maturely handled in the thread itself (great job ladies, much better than what has gone on previous!).
The page 29 troll who needed to be reported was really the only thing I saw that was beyond way out of line.
It's possible because of the prior problems in the ME/NA forum that Capt Ewok shut it down without looking through the whole 30 pages. Which is really a shame.
I hope you get it opened up again - I found the subject very interesting and rather enlightening.

OK if that was the reason then i agree, no reason for that kind of comment. Maybe next time the punishment can go directly to the one involved. If all involved are still concerned in restarting the topic is there reason it has not started again. (peacefully)

No matter what your stance or opinion on the topic, that person should not only be banned, but completely disbarred from the site!!

I just saw a warning from Ewok in another thread that if the insulting posts did not stop he would lock down that thread, but had decided to keep it open hoping the warning would be enough. With this MENA thread lockdown, he just closed the thread and gave no warning. Given the nature of that particular insult and the fact that the thread was older and MENA has become engulfed in flames, Ithink he just used TOS to lock it.
I do wish particular troll like posts would be targeted on an individual basis rather than shutting down the whole thread. There are dynamics in this forum that can only be understood by staying around for a longer period of time. If you are not a regular posters you can misunderstand the intent of many posts that are designed specically to insult or cause flaming and assume its just a joke. Maybe Ewok is too busy to notice all the particulars since this is a huge forum with 1000s of members.

While there was some disagreement going on in the thread, that comment was totally uncalled for and went WAAAY over the line. If it was meant as a joke it was not funny. That person does not even post in MENA, so why weren't they just banned for a period of time? They are probobly running all over VJ doing the same crazy stuff or laughing themselves silly because they were successful, and what repercussion did they get for it?? But like was said by MBP, Ewok probably gets so tired of hearing about MENA, it's the simpler fix. Ok it's Sunday so I'm going to settle down now. Before I have to go back to the confessional!
