I am fluent in my fiancé’s language (and have done informal translations of articles and discourses for websites etc.), but don’t have any official certification or degree in the language or anything like that. My question is, could I do the English translations of my fiancé’s documents, such as birth certificate, college degrees etc.? I’ve typed up a document stating that I am competent to translate the language; I'm just wondering if that would be enough for the interview at the consulate and later, for the AOS in USA?

Per the USCIS, documents not in English must be translated. The policy states as follows:
"All documents that are in a language other than English must be submitted with a translation. The person translating the document must certify that the translation is complete and accurate and that he/she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English."


I am also fluent in my fiance's language but had a friend translate our e-mails/letters into English (I did the same for her and her fiance) when we mailed proof of relationship to the USCIS.
When it came to his BC we had it professionally done and the translator gave us proof that he is a professional, etc. along with the receipt.

Thanks! It is good advice to get an official translation at least of the official documents - like BC.

I would also check farther into th US Embassy in India. Some embassy's required approved translators and then documents have to be documented as a true certified translated copy. I recommend not taking shortcuts or saving a few dollars. Have a legitimate company do the work for you. Remember, the documents have to be certified, and a friend translating or you yourself, may not be accepted.
