Hey everyone,

I've started to wonder a bit about drivers licenses. My fiance is a UK citizen and will be moving to the US. He does not own a drivers license in the UK, only provisional license. Does anyone know how to go about getting a drivers license in Ohio? I've read in places that you have to show you UK license to get one in the US?

check out the Ohio DMV site.... http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/driver_license/dl_info.htm

You can read about my experience getting my Ohio drivers license here:

Your fiancee will have to take a written test followed by a practical (driving) test. The whole thing will cost you $23. You can find the "drivers manual" to read online at the BMV on their web site here: http://www.bmv.ohio.gov

He will not be able to get his Ohio license until he has his Green Card - they want proof of legal residency before they will issue a drivers license.

he will need his EAD and social security number to get a liscence in ohio. he doesnt have to wait to get a green card.

The question that i'm really wondering at this stage, is if he's never had a drivers license before will that hinder him getting one when he moves to Ohio? I know he will probably have to keep the temp. license a bit longer than 15 mins because he doesn't have an actual UK license yet.

The question he is asking me is if it would be worth him taking the driving courses in the UK to get a license there before he comes over, or will it really not matter and should he not waste the money on it? I told him how easy it is to get a license in Ohio compared to the UK as far as classes with instructors and how hard the test is, etc. We're mainly wondering about the cost issues.

no, that won't hinder him...

I would say get him to wait until he moves here but that is just my opinion...

i believe his uk liscence would only be good in usa for a year then he will have to get a ohio liscence anyway. why pay double. i would also say just wait.

I agree... I would wait...

In Ohio they don't transfer or value the uk licence , it would be a total waste of money to take UK test. In OH u have to get permit and take test regardless of UK situation so tell him to save his money good.gif

Even more reason just to wait, then... I don't have a UK driving license either and had thought of passing my test while I'm over here, but decided against it because after not driving for so many years (I had a ton of lessons years ago but never took my test) I might as well just start from scratch on the 'wrong' side of the road! If Ohio won't even transfer a UK license or recognise it at all, there's even less point (none at all, in fact) in passing my test before I get there. Thanks for that info. smile.gif

In case it's any use... I just found this thread, and a couple of people on there say they were able to get an Ohio license with a Social Security number & their NOA1 for their EAD/AOS. If that's true, it's good news for me - the sooner I can take some lessons and pass my test, the better! smile.gif

u will need a social secuirity number. i doenst have to be the social security card itself but u can get a print out of what the number will be when the card comes. it will take a month for the card to be issued but u can get the number sooner.

I disagree. Both times I have gotten my social security card (the first time with the restriction, then the second time when I had the restriction taken off), I received the card in the mail less than a week after I visited the office to apply for it.
